FridayMusings supports a Yes Vote for our Public Schools

FridayMusings strongly supports the LPS 2021 Bond Proposal being overwhelmingly supported as a show of commitment by our overall community which has a history of supporting our public schools.

The LPS buildings are getting older and one only has to look at a number of schools throughout Michigan and the lack of maintenance to see how fortunate we are to have a district that wants to provide an upgraded learning environment. An environment with modern technology befitting a community attracting younger families and who want to continue to serve as a beacon establishing Livonia as a go-to hometown.

With the district promising new educational programs Musings is waiting to see just what exactly those programs are. But the district has a track record of maintenance and quality construction and understands the need for long-range planning and so the trust here runs deep.

Let's turn out in record numbers again and show the region that Livonia supports our public schools. Supports in more than words. Supports at the ballot box. FridayMusings supports a YES Vote for OUR public schools.

I have been torn on this bond issue for the Livonia Public Schools.

Always a supporter of our public school system I have not been happy with the new performing art centers and the lack of ease of accessibility to Livonia non-profit art organizations, nor in the selling off of school property and the removal of open spaces.

But that aside the realization hit me on the need to support the 2021 Bond Proposal. It hit me when the bodyguard and I updated the attic insulation, which had almost none, and replaced the hot water tank, which was approaching its end days.

So the realization was that if homes require updates, upgrades and maintenance then so too should our schools.

I want to maintain our property values and our schools are a big driver of quality of life helping maintain strong property values.

Join me in voting YES.

Madonna to Host Virtual and

In-Person Graduate School

Open House

Thinking about a graduate degree or know someone who is? Attend Madonna University’s no-obligation Graduate School Open House Tuesday, Feb. 16, either in-person (wearing masks and socially-distanced), or virtually via Zoom. The virtual Open House runs from 5-6 p.m. The in-person Open House takes place from 6- 7 p.m. in Room 2403 of the University’s Main Administration Building at the Northwest corner of Levan and Schoolcraft Rds. RSVP for the session you prefer at this link https://www.madonna.edu/admissions/graduate/events/

The Zoom link will be emailed to those who RSVP for the virtual Open House.

The Open House provides an opportunity to learn about available programs and to meet with professors. The application fee will be waived for those who apply during the Open House. For more information, contact Graduate Admissions at 734-432-5763.

Livonia Arts Scholarship 2021

Livonia resident college students and 2021 graduates are eligible for a Livonia Arts Commission scholarship valued at $2,000. The scholarships are available for Livonia residents that will be attending college in 2021 and majoring in categories pertaining to the arts.

Deadline postmark is Friday, March 21.

/Spree Memorial Scholarship

Up to six $2,000 scholarships may be awarded during the Spree 71 celebration in June. Eligibility requirements include:

be a Livonia resident and a member of the 2021 graduating class who attends a Livonia or Clarenceville public school or a Livonia resident attending a private school.

Deadline for postmark of application is Friday, April 23. Scholarship applications are available on the city of Livonia website under Youth Commission or you may call 734-466-2415 for a copy.

Scholarship Program

The Fernon Feenstra Scholarship Program, funded by the Livonia Kiwanis, provides several $1,000 scholarships each year to high school students in demonstrating a desire to better themselves through education and a passion to help others through community service.

The deadline to submit the application is June 1st at:

Fernon Feenstra was one of the Founding Members of the Livonia Kiwanis Club in 1981. Described by Livonia's Mayor as "Mr. Sunshine", Fernon's positive attitude and philanthropic outlook will always be remembered. It is our honor to name this scholarship program after him and our hope that the award recipients will also enrich the lives of others in their communities for decades to come.
