In 1971 veterans groups in Livonia called for the construction of a modern bandstand as a lasting memorial to the Livonia men and women who gave their lives in service to their country.
This was not the first proposal.
The original proposal to construct a bandstand and an amphitheater was suggested as a foundation for "Opera Under the Stars" in the 1950s.
One of the chief proponents was Lester McCoy, director of the civic chorus.
Eddie Edgar, a columnist for the Livonia Observer, wrote in 1971 that "the chorus spent most of its time rehearsing at Bentley High School. And, each year, as time for the annual concert approached, there came a hue and cry for a modern facility in which to display their talents."
Again in the 2010s, Laura Toy teamed up with the typewriter, and Livonia art organizations started to drum up support for an amphitheater and outdoor bandstand.
The 1950s. The 1970s. The 2010s.
Now is the time to move forward with a bandstand/amphitheatre. Who will be the leader to say "now is the time."
Let's say the 2020s was when Livonia said "Yes" to a dream that has been around for nearly seven decades.
