C.E.R.T. Does the Job
The Livonia Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that could impact our area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. These skills include fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan acknowledges the role CERT played last week, "Livonia C.E.R.T.ainly wouldn’t be vaccinating 2500 seniors over age 65 without our Community Emergency Response Team volunteers. While all Covid vaccine appointments have been booked, you can head to www.vaccinatelivonia.org to register to be notified if more vaccines arrive."
Using this training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhoods, or workplaces, following incidents when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in the community.
CERT is one of five organizations that operate under the Citizens Corps, the nationwide grassroots movement that encourages all Americans to help make their communities – and the nation – safer, stronger, and better prepared for all types of hazards and threats through active volunteerism.

Livonia Robotics Virtual Open House
Normally around this time of year, Livonia Robotics would open up the Dickinson Robotics Center to the public. They would invite new students to come and check out what they do at the DRC and learn a bit about the FTC, Middle School Program, and FRC, the High School Program.
Their official interest survey isn't available until May but this time gives students and their parents time to investigate what FIRST Robotics is and whether it would be a good activity to consider.
In lieu of the Open House please enjoy this video that gives a small and educational glimpse into robotics in Livonia. Even if you do not have a student eligible take a look and be proud of all that is involved in our Livonia Robotics program.

Two Covid shots, and a mask. It almost makes things seem normal.
Almost.
Traveling out of state for the first time in 14 months. Getting to see two year old grandson Leonardo. Walking the almost empty streets of Denver. Sitting outside with Paul, Raquel, Leo and bodyguard labrador DiNello.
Almost gave a sense of normalcy. Almost.
Returning home to hear of the smooth and orderly vaccination of Livonia residents. Offered up by County Commissioner Terry Marecki. Organized by Livonia Mayor Maureen Brosnan. Aided by Clerk Susan Nash with assistance from Councilman Jim Jolly. Supported by State Representative Laurie Pohutsky and Senator Dayna Polehanki.
City employees greeting residents with smiles, shots administered by first responders, with more smiles, department heads working the room with even more smiles.
Everything pointing to another step closer to a return to normalcy.
But the civility. The appreciation. The teamwork. All pushed aside the negativity of a smaller and smaller number of facebook postings who still rant about wearing a mask, the objection to vaccines, and on and on and on.
I like this almost return to normalcy. Now with the bodyguard having her first shot we can look at a trip to Farmville North Carolina to visit my mom and dad and Canton Georgia to visit her sister.
I am smiling a little more today than yesterday.

This week, the United States passed a devastating and unimaginable milestone. More than 500,000 American lives have been lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. My heart goes out to the families, friends, and communities grieving the lives of loved ones.
Also this week, the House passed the American Rescue Act to get the COVID-19 pandemic under control, deliver relief for Americans, and get our economy back on track. Here are a few key objectives:
- Combat the pandemic: The plan will mount a national vaccination program with community vaccination sites. It will also scale up testing and tracing and address shortages of personal protective equipment and other critical supplies.
- Reopen schools: This plan will make the necessary investments to safely reopen schools and get American students and teachers back in the classroom.
- Deliver immediate relief for hardworking Michiganders: The plan will provide direct cash assistance to households across America by delivering a $1,400 stimulus check, extend and expand unemployment insurance so American workers can pay their bills, and give 27 million workers a raise by raising the federal minimum wage.
- Provide much-needed relief to American families: The plan will provide direct housing and nutrition assistance to families struggling to get by and expand access to safe and reliable child care, and affordable health care.
- Support communities struggling with the economic fallout: The plan will provide crucial support for the hardest-hit small businesses with EIDL grants, expanded PPP eligibility, and more. It will also provide crucial resources to protect the jobs of first responders, frontline public health workers, teachers, transit workers, and other essential workers that all Americans depend on.

Coding FUNdamentals!
Anthony Brunswick, a Churchill High School member of the Livonia Warriors robotics team shares the story of his team mentoring of 5th and 6th-grade students:
On February 2nd and 4th, the Livonia Warriors hosted a program called “Coding FUNdamentals” for 5th and 6th-grade students at Webster Elementary School.
Since early December, mentors and students alike began meeting weekly in order to put on this event for students. Starting out small, more students were added as the program was developed more and more.
The curriculum was based on CS First, a coding instructional site made by Google. Using the “Code Your Own Hero” curriculum as a template for the 2-day class, students were taught in a google meet, and then sent into breakout rooms with Livonia Warriors students for any help they needed, or to show off their code to their classmates.
After gaining 35 students for the 1st session, before having to shut down applications, the Warriors look forward to hosting sessions of “Coding FUNdamentals” at the other 3 Upper Elementary schools within Livonia Public Schools, and possibly even more advanced lessons at all 4 schools.
