Our hometown historic public schools issues statement to continue dialogue as to steps being
taken with community partners regarding the coronavirus
As a follow-up to the public school statement issued in Musings last Friday regarding the coronavirus, the following communication from Andrea Oquist, Superintendent and Jennifer Talariol, Director of Student Service, to Livonia public schools staff and families is being shared with our readers to keep our hometown community current by Andrea Oquist, Superintendent and Jennifer Taiariol, Director of Student Service:

We know the well being of your child and family is of great importance to you, as it is to us.  Over the past few days, there has been increased focus on the coronavirus, a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person, and the potential impact on schools. We have prepared this communication for you, in hopes it will answer some of the questions that you may have.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has activated the State Emergency Operation Center to coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.  While there have been no reported cases in Wayne County or in Michigan, Livonia Public Schools is in communication with the City of Livonia and tracking communication from the state and county health departments.  The City of Livonia's Department of Emergency Preparedness is working closely with local and state health agencies along with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding the coronavirus.   We will continue to follow direction from the agencies stated above, in order to assist the families and staff we serve.

Within Livonia Public Schools, our district maintenance and operations department has a very specific cleaning protocol that trained staff utilize for infectious diseases.  This cleaning protocol has been in place for many years. Additionally, last fall in a proactive effort to combat the spread of the flu and other viruses, we purchased specialized sanitation machines that  provide hospital grade disinfection for our schools.

In regard to our Livonia families who have recently traveled or will travel to countries with large coronavirus outbreaks, protocols have been established by the Center for Disease Control for citizens returning to the United States which should be followed.

To provide you with accurate information, we are sharing the following resource from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services ( https://tinyurl.com/whtm2cs ) .  MDHHS indicates there are no specific precautions beyond those encouraged to prevent spread of the flu or common cold, which include: washing hands or utilizing alcohol-based hand sanitizer, covering your mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing and staying home if you are sick, along with contacting your health care provider.

While we are not experts in this area, we are partners with you and our community in keeping our children and staff as healthy as they can be.  Together we will stay informed and involved. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Dr. Jennifer Taiariol at 734-744-2524 or jtaiariol@livoniapublicschools.org
Our hometown Community Foundation continues to make an impact 25 years after its founding
Over $500,000 granted to community organizations. Wow.

In 1994, the State of Michigan encouraged formation and support of community foundations by providing  income tax incentives to both individuals and businesses.

The Livonia Community Foundation was chartered in 1995 for the purpose of building and administering an endowment fund, and to seek contributions to grow that fund.  A donation of $15,000 from former Mayor Robert Bennett in 1996 brought the balance to $32,000 at the end of its first full year.  It was the foresight of former Mayor Bennett combined with his leadership and that of those community leaders who have since served on the Board of Trustees that grew the Livonia Community Foundation to $386,000 by December 2001 and to over one million currently.

The earnings (interest, etc.) on that fund must be used to support the Foundation's mission supporting Livonia's own cultural, historical, educational, and charitable. The number of contributors has grown each year, and now includes more than 750 Livonia families, individuals, and businesses.

IRS Increases Visits to High-Income Taxpayers
Who Haven't Filed Tax Returns
As part of a larger effort to ensure compliance and fairness, the Internal Revenue Service announced that it will step up efforts to visit high-income taxpayers who in prior years have failed to timely file one or more of their tax returns.

Following the recent and ongoing hiring of additional enforcement personnel, IRS revenue officers across the country will increase face-to-face visits with high-income taxpayers who haven't filed tax returns in 2018 or previous years. These visits are primarily aimed at informing these taxpayers of their tax filing and paying obligations and bringing these taxpayers into compliance.

Bryan Besco
For the current tax season, the IRS reminds taxpayers that everyone should file their 2019 tax return by the April 15 filing deadline regardless of whether they can pay in full. Six-month filing extensions are also available, although that does not extend the April deadline for paying any taxes owed.

For the new visits taking place, high-income non-filers taxpayers are those who generally received income in excess of $100,000 during a tax year and did not file a tax return with the IRS. Taxpayers who exercise their best efforts in filing their tax returns and paying or entering into agreements to pay their taxes deserve to know that the IRS is aggressively pursuing others who have failed to satisfy their filing and payment obligations.

For this new initiative, these high-income taxpayers have typically received numerous letters from the IRS over an extended period of time, so they generally realize they have a tax issue.

Revenue officer visits should not be confused with scams. Here is what to look for:

  • While most IRS revenue officer visits are unannounced, they will always provide two forms of official credentials, including a serial number and photo of the IRS employee.
  • A legitimate revenue officer helps taxpayers understand and meet their tax obligations. The officer will explain the liability to the taxpayer, along with the consequences of failing to comply with the law.
  • If someone has an outstanding federal tax debt, the visiting officer will request payment, but will provide a range of options.

Keeping up with our Livonia City Council folks.
Today, Robert Donovic
Councilman Rob Donovic appears to be the first member of the Livonia City Council to actively involve himself in the 2020 Presidential campaign.

Donovic is joining in the formation with Albanian community leaders to in the words of one formation leader "elect our President and elect Republicans up and and down the ticket and to serve an active role in helping to re-elect our president."

In yet another area Councilman Donovic is expressing his preference. A preference that will bring smiles regardless of party affiliation.

Donovic has now let it be known that he likes to support Girl Scouts and Girl Scout cookies. Not the first council person to admit it and certainly not the last. But as he was at Laurel Park he could not resist making a purchase. This typewriter likes the ones with peanut butter Rob, if you want to share some.

"These two young entrepreneurs aren't only selling amazing Girl Scout cookies, they both want to be future politicians too! I'd vote for them!"

So it was not the cookies, it was the potential voter in 2028. Got it.
Let's leave Livonia for one night. March 6th.

Keeping up with our legislative candidates seeking to run against Representative Laurie Pohutsky: Martha Ptashnik and Penny Crider
and an update on Representative Laurie Pohutsky

March is Reading Month! Candidate Martha
Ptashnik who is running
for the Republican nomination for state representative, for the right to take on incumbent Laurie Pohutsky was reading over the weekend to the student at Michigan Connections Academy, a tuition-free K-12 online public school option available for students throughout Michigan.

Here is her posting on Facebook:

"Thank you to Amy Dunlap of Michigan Connections Academy for inviting me to read to your students. No David! by David Shannon was one of my son David's favorite books growing up, and it was a privilege to share it with young readers."

Candidate Penny Crider running for the Republican nomination for state representative, for the right to take on incumbent Laurie Pohutsky includes on her facebook page the following:

"State Rep. Lynn Afendoulis (R-East Grand Rapids) has introduced a bill which would end the practice, introduced by our Governor last year, of flying the gay pride flag from government office buildings in June. The bill would ban any flags other than the state or U.S. flags from state buildings. Period. Sounds sensible, right?

Not to our Livonia State Representative  Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) 'The Pride flag, like the celebration of the month in June, is about the acknowledgment of another person's humanity, their right to love whom they choose and the fight to remove the barriers - societal, institutional or otherwise - that prevent someone from being themselves. I genuinely can't fathom how anyone could be opposed to that.'

"I can fathom it. And I do oppose flying special interest flags. So does much of your constituency. It's time to elect someone who actually reflects the views of our city."

Incumbent State Representative Laurie Pohutsky will be hosting a Town Hall of the Opioid Crisis this Thursday from 6:00- 7:30 at the Bennett Civic Center Library:

Livonia, the cultural heartbeat of southeast Michigan with over 20 art and cultural organizations, is poised to vote YES on March 10.
