Gallagher to discuss “Changing Detroit” at Livonia Historical Society meeting, Monday, March 28
|
Since 1956 the Livonia Historical Society has been supporting knowledge and awareness of history, primarily Livonia but also the history of southeast Michigan. The society also has as its mission the support of Greenmead historical village.
Please join the Livonia Historical Society on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 2 p.m., to hear about “Changing Detroit: What Detroit Can teach Other Cities.” For all its challenges, the city of Detroit made many positive strides in urban redevelopment in recent years. This program will examine what worked, what didn’t, and what Detroit can teach other cities.
John Gallagher, author of several books on Detroit and related topics, is a recently-retired reporter from the Detroit Free Press. His newest book is “The Englishman and Detroit,” published in 2021. After the presentation, books will be available for purchase.
The Livonia Historical Society meets in the historic Alexander Blue House, Greenmead Historical Park, 20501 Newburgh Road, Livonia, MI 48154. The entrance to Greenmead is on the west side of Newburgh, a short distance south of Eight Mile Rd. For more information, email Jim McConnell at jam1776@sbcglobal.net or 734-525-2962

Phoenix Theatre Chain continues to grow
High-quality moviegoing experiences just like what we experience at the Livonia Phoenix Theatre, or as Musings likes to identify it, Livonia's Art in the Park — in sight, sound and all-reclining seats — will soon be coming to Woodland Mall outside Grand Rapids, as Phoenix Theatres has announced it will be opening its planned 14-screen complex on the mall’s south side in April.
The recently installed vertical marquee, spelling out PHOENIX, is sure to show moviegoers the way.
The marquee, composed of more than 200 light bulbs, was designed with a classical 1920s and ’30s style in homage to the Chicago Theatre, Jordan Hohman, the local executive, recently told in an interview by the Grand Rapids WKTV during a backstage tour. The building overall carries a refined art deco style that makes “going to the movies” special again, honoring “tradition” while still providing a “new, modern experience.”
Cory Jacobson, owner of the Phoenix Theatre says, the 14 screens at this new location will be the most screens of any Phoenix Theatres location and will be the 50th screen of the Michigan-based company.

Barb Iovan, one of the organizers of the service project says that "One of the things I love most about Redford Interfaith Relief is that clients are treated with much dignity and may "shop" for themselves ~ choosing their own brands, varieties, etc.
"One bar of soap or 10 - it's adds up and is appreciated!"
Contact Barb on her Facebook page and leave a note on her Facebook Messenger for drop off locations.

The City of Livonia has announced the launch of the new City app!
|
Available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, the app is the best way to report potholes, missed trash pick-up, and countless other service requests.
The app allows you to tag the exact location of any service requests, ensuring it gets attention from the City of Livonia or Wayne County.
|
What makes this announcement interesting is that in 2015 when Tim Klisz ran for City Council one of the ideas in his issue-driven campaign was a City App.
So glad Livonia is moving forward with this new technology but the announcement is just another reason that there should be a debriefing of candidates after an election and an occasional check in with them to get the best ideas of candidates who ran for office but may not have received the most number of votes.
|
An example this past year is the idea for a citywide compost pick up suggested by Carrie Budzinski.
The typewriter has been using the company she shared during her campaign and in the words of the bodyguard, "I love it. So glad to sign up. Looking forward to have free compost material delivered for use in the garden this spring by the compost company."
Way to go Livonia. Great idea. We all benefit when citizens are engaged and offer the opportunity to be a part of providing solutions.
