2022 Tree-Plenish Franklin High School
Students from Franklin High School have set a goal to plant at least 150 trees to offset their school's paper usage. They are offering to donate $5 a tree for every tree that volunteers will come and plant in your yard on April 30th!
Three of Franklin High School’s leadership groups are sponsoring a tree planting event this spring! If you live in Livonia, Canton, Plymouth, Redford, Westland and request a tree to be planted in your yard Franklin student volunteers will come out on Saturday, April 30th to do the planting.
The last day to request a tree is Wednesday, March 30th.
The typewriter has invested $15.00 for three trees, two redbuds, and one Paper Birch. Had fun walking the estate this weekend to check out possible locations.
How did Tree-Plenish get its start
|
After noticing the amount of paper that was used at their local public high school in Massachusetts, two students decided that they wanted to replenish the environment with the resources that their school has taken. They set out with a goal to plant 230 trees in the local community - the number required to make up for their school's paper consumption during the 2018-2019 academic year.
The tree-planting event was a major success. The community came together to plant over 330 trees, exceeding the initial goal! After spreading to other towns and working with environmental advocacy groups,
Tree-Plenish is ready to expand its mission to high schools around the country! Livonia's Franklin High School has accepted the challenge.

The typewriter is beyond ready for spring.
Bring on the compost.
|
We are approaching compost season! That was the headline in an email from Midtown Composting. The message included a link to order up compost.
This typewriter walked the estate to check on which plantings would benefit from some compost.
Decided that it would go in our incubator garden where we plant seedlings or plant cuttings--plenty of sun and water. Now with compost.
We signed up for Midtown Composting for all our compostable food products as a result of an idea from Carrie Budzinski, a part of her campaign.
8 months in and we love it. A pick-up from our front porch every Tuesday. A filled bucket picked up and a new, clean bucket dropped off.
And now compost delivered directly to our house.

What ingredients make up the Farm Compost?
Our Farm Compost is made up primarily of leaves. There are also woodchips, manure, food waste, grass, and paper lawn bags.
Is your Farm Compost organic?
We do not add any chemicals in the production of our Farm Compost. Our product is tested annually and no detectable levels of chemical residues have been found to date. When organics are collected and dropped off at our site we do not accept trash or plastic. However, we occasionally find bits of plastic in our materials that our screener was unable to sift out.

Students Create Mural Inside the Campus Chapel
|
Graphic design students, Katrina Agriostathi, Maria Teresa Carzon, and Nadia Troiani, along with graphic design instructor Robin Ward recently completed a beautiful mural in the University Center Chapel. The mural depicts Mary, their Madonna, surrounded by flowers and animals that not only symbolize her, but also remind viewers of St. Francis, the patron saint of nature, and the beautiful nature and wildlife that surrounds Madonna University’s campus.
The border will eventually include a list of Mary’s titles to tie the piece together. Collectively, the students came up with a unique design to honor Mary at Madonna.
The students said their favorite memories of the project were experiencing the process together and learning from each other.
They hope that the campus community enjoys the mural. To see this mural, you can attend Mass Monday-Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. in the University Center (southwest entrance near the Franciscan Center).

Madonna Alumna is Making News in Lansing
Madonna alumna Luisa Wiewgorra, '21, is using her degree to tell stories for Fox 47 TV in Lansing. The Nolan Award winner is from Potsdam, Germany, where she once hosted a radio show, prior to coming to Madonna to study journalism and to play volleyball.
She enjoys telling stories, especially in Michigan's capital. As the station's newest reporter, she appeared as a guest on the station's Morning Blend Show, where she shared how she decided to come to the U.S. and what she loves about her work as a reporter.
Another recent story about an ultramarathon runner, had Wiewgorra running, literally.
Wiewgorra stays in touch with Neal Haldane, journalism and public relations professor, and director of the writing program at Madonna, for advice and feedback on her reporting and writing. She also eagerly helps other Madonna students by keeping Haldane informed about job openings at the station where she works.
Haldane is very proud of her accomplishments, and her success in the field of multimedia journalism. She not only is a great representative of the Madonna journalism program but also of their broadcast and cinema arts program, which was her minor, he said.

Since 1947 Madonna has provided social workers to make our society a better place.
|
Madonna University joins with the National Association of Social Workers to celebrate Social Work Month 2022, which highlights how social workers have enriched our society for more than a century and how their services continue to be needed today.
Social Work got its start at Madonna University in 1947 when the first laywomen were welcomed as students. The Master's in Social Work (MSW) program was launched in 2016.
Kudos to the more than 1,500 Madonna social work alumni of different races, cultures, religions, genders, and sexual orientations who are helping to make our society a better place to live for all individuals, families, communities, and our nation. They serve as an inspiration to future Madonna students who want to change lives through a career in social work.
