This week, President Biden signed into law $17,807,600 in federal funding that I secured for 10 community projects across Michigan's 11th Congressional District. This funding will be used for projects ranging from mental health and law enforcement to updating our water systems, and to the construction of new public spaces for seniors and families.
My staff and I have been working for months with mayors, township supervisors, local and statewide elected officials from both parties to determine the greatest needs in our communities. Every community project that was identified and submitted to the House Appropriations Committee was funded. When we invest in our communities, they thrive, and this funding will impact countless lives throughout our District for years to come.
Livonia Senior Center Improvements Project. Funded Amount: $3,000,000
With nearly 19,000 residents aged 65 or older, Livonia’s Senior Center is a hub of services and programs for one of southeast Michigan’s largest populations of seniors. The Livonia Senior Center Project is a renovation of the Jack E. Kirksey Recreation Center to accommodate a safer, more accessible, state-of-the-art Senior Center along with an expanded fitness center. The current Livonia Senior Center is a 60-year-old, retro-fitted church that the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed is inadequate for the safety and health of Livonia’s seniors. Small spaces, inadequate HVAC, and a lack of accessibility critically restrict the existing Senior Center. Building a new senior center, attached to the Kirksey Recreation Center, will expand Livonia seniors’ health and fitness opportunities while providing a safe and accessible new space for senior programming. This federal funding will provide for upgrades that allow increased access, larger class spaces, and for social distancing measures to continue after capacity limits are removed.

We could have a barn burner campaign shaping up this Fall

Two separate emails were sent to Councilman Rob Donovic asking for comment. As Musings went to press no response had been forthcoming.
The upcoming election poses an interesting opportunity for several candidates. And word on the street has one opportunity for a city councilman who moved to Livonia with the expectation of running for State Representative. And now if he wants to line up his 4th address in 6 years he might have that chance.
Word on the street has Councilman Robert Donovic looking at running against Matt Koleszar. In the words of one of Donovic's strong supporters in 2021 this "will be the most expensive race in Michigan next year."
So let's put this in perspective. Donovic lived and was raised in Westland, although if you talked with him during his two runs for Council he was a Livonia resident--that has some truth because he attended Livonia schools.
Then Donovic moved to Redford where he ran for Redford Parks Commissioner and won. One year later he resigned to move into Livonia, meeting with Mayor Wright to ask his support to run for State Representative, as it turned out in a primary running against Brian Meakin.
The Mayor would not support this campaign but told Donovic that he would appoint him to the Arts Commission and if he ran for city council would then support him.
Westland to Redford to Livonia. Sounds like a plan albeit a somewhat opportunistic plan.
Now he is jockeying to run for State Representative but he is not in the district so he has to move again. This time from the east side of Livonia to the West Side.
Westland. Redford. Livonia. Livonia again. Again a plan albeit a somewhat opportunistic plan.

With the POAM endorsing Koleszar that takes away some of the endorsement that helped him narrowly finish in 4th for a two-year term and 3rd for a four-year term.
Koleszar is known for his hard work in the District. One example is his commitment and follow-through to secure $250k for the Plymouth Cultural Center ADA renovations.
If Donovic is going to move into a new district, a new house, and a new address then he has until Friday to register as he has to be registered 30 days prior to the filing deadline.
And then he must know that the race to defeat a two-term incumbent will not be a walk in the park.
The whole thing sounds like a plan. An opportunistic plan at that.
Rob, it might be to your advantage to stay in one location and get to know the voters who put you in office. Now that is a plan. A real plan.

Every Rotary club president-elect is required to participate in President-elect training each year. With that in mind, Great Lakes Rotary PETS designed a three-day conference that truly benefited the attendees by providing opportunities to learn about the breadth of Rotary, to share ideas with fellow Rotarians, and to make their clubs stronger than ever!
