FridayMusings says we need to continue focusing on the positive future. With that in mind this typewriter wanted to share some of the scholarships available to our Livonia students. You can click on the application, download and print it out for your use.
$500 Franklin PTSA Service Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a graduating senior of Franklin High School. The applicant must be a
member of the Franklin PTSA. The scholarship is for use at an accredited college, university, community college, trade or technical school. This scholarship recognizes volunteer service within the PTSA and the community.
Please see the form on the left. Applications due Thursday, April 30.

$250 Churchill PTSA Service Scholarship
Churchill PTSA is also giving away a scholarship to a Churchill HS senior. The application is on the right.
$1,000 Michigan PTA Fran Anderson Scholarship
The Fran Anderson Michigan PTA Scholarship was created as a way to recognize high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership and advocacy skills through participation in PTA. A minimum of one $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year and additional scholarships and/or scholarships of varying amounts are awarded based on available funds.
The late Fran Anderson, past Michigan PTA President, always demonstrated the highest level of advocacy for all children and her leadership continues to have a positive impact on Michigan PTA. To honor her many years of being a champion for children, the scholarship was named in her honor.
Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee comprised of Michigan PTA
Past Presidents based on the following criteria: PTA/PTSA involvement, essay, community service, additional activities, academics and letters of recommendation.

The Fernon Feenstra Scholarship Program, funded by the Livonia Kiwanis, provides ten to fifteen $1,000 scholarships each year to Livonia High School students demonstrating a desire to better themselves through education and a passion to help others.
Fernon Feenstra was one of the Founding Members of the Livonia Kiwanis Club in 1981. Described by Livonia's Mayor as "Mr. Sunshine", Fernon's positive attitude and philanthropic outlook will always be remembered. It is our honor to name this scholarship program after him and our hope that the award recipients will also enrich the lives of others in their communities for decades to come.
Fernon Feehstra Kiwanis Early Risers Scholarship Criteria
All Students Applying for the Fernon Feenstra Scholarship Program Must Meet the Following Criteria:
- High school senior graduating in spring 2020
- Must meet at least one of the following residency requirements:
- Student is enrolled in a Livonia or Clarenceville area high school (including students whose primary residence is outside of Livonia or Clarenceville)
- Student has a primary residence in Livonia (including students who are home-schooled or attend public/private schools outside of Livonia)
- Enrolled full-time to begin at an institution (university, community college, vocational training center, or other qualifying educational institution) for fall 2020
- Application form, essay, and recommendations submitted by Friday, May 15, 2020
- GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended, but not required

2020 Livonia Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program
 The Livonia Chamber of Commerce plans to award several scholarships to seniors graduating this spring from Livonia's four high schools and pursuing postsecondary studies at a school that is a member of the Livonia Chamber of Commerce. A series of $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students planning to attend a university, and several scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing skilled and technical trades.
A total of $10,000 was awarded in 2019 to Livonia high school graduates. Eligible high school seniors must graduate in 2020 from Livonia Franklin, Churchill, Stevenson, or Clarenceville High School. Winners will be notified in spring 2020.
This is an annual scholarship program authorized by the Livonia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors funded by donations and proceeds from Chamber programming. Scholarship proceeds must be used at a Livonia Chamber of Commerce member institution. (Those schools are: Schoolcraft College, Madonna University, Eastern Michigan University, Lawrence Technological University, Baker College, Walsh College and Wayne State University.) The award will be directly sent to the school of the winner's choice upon complete student enrollment in that institution.

With Special Education being so significantly important, Congresswoman Haley Stevens Joins Bipartisan Push to Fully Fund Special Education Programs During Coronavirus Pandemic

Last week, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) announced she is joining a bipartisan push to include full funding for special education programs in future COVID-19 relief packages.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), passed in 1975, guarantees a free and appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children. The federal government has consistently fallen short of its funding commitments to states and school districts, leaving special education programs at a disadvantage. In recent weeks, the closure of school buildings in Michigan and across the country has had an outsized impact on students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
"As schools move to remote learning, the resources promised by the federal government in IDEA are even more essential," wrote a bipartisan group of Members in a
letter to House leadership. "The CARES Act is a step in the right direction, but it is necessary that IDEA receives its own designated set aside in any future packages. The comprehensive assessment and support services authorized by IDEA help to close the academic achievement gap and help prepare these students for further education, employment, and independent living. Educators are working overtime to assure their students with disabilities are still receiving a quality and appropriate education, but the challenges to meet this goal are even greater with online learning. Now, more than ever, it is incumbent upon the federal government to provide these resources for special needs students."
In March, Congresswoman Stevens sent a
letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, calling for the Department of Education to provide support to school districts in ensuring accommodations and accessible instructional material for students with disabilities, including ensuring documents and websites are compatible with assistive technologies, such as screen readers and closed captioning videos.
