Michael Ladwig nails it "Take comfort in natures recurring beauty.
It will outlast any virus."
The Felician Sisters, calling Livonia their home since the 1930's,
stand with our hometown and offer their support and prayers.
FridayMusings received a note from Felician Sister Joyce Marie Van de Vyver and felt it was important to share with you today. Here they are standing on the steps of the Mother House wearing their masks while maintaining the correct social distance.

"We feel it is important for the families we serve to realize that the Felician Sisters are still very active and concerned about their welfare, despite the physical restraints placed on everyone at this time."

Through the facilities, on the grounds of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent (borde red by Schoolcraft, Levan, Five Mile, and Newburgh) the Felician Sisters have served the people of God in a variety of ways.

They have offered healing and healthcare at St. Mary Mercy Hospital; taught preschoolers at Montessori Center of Our Lady and St. Mary Child Care Center; prepared young ladies for the future at Ladywood High School; educated women and men for their careers in life at Madonna University; listened to the memories and consoled the elderly at Marywood Nursing Care Center; held the hands of the dying and offered support to those who were grieving at Angela Hospice.

Today we take another step into our ministries and services. Although we have always lifted you up in prayer to the Lord, our supplications have now intensified.

As we pray for our nation and the entire world, we want you to know that we will always offer an extra prayer as we hold a special place in our hearts for the infants, toddlers, teens, young people, middle-aged and elders within the city of Livonia and the neighboring communities.

Even though we appear to be isolated and must physically distance ourselves from you, we are not hidden behind the convent walls. Quite the opposite...we are storming the heavens and breaking through to the Lord as we pray for each of you.

Whispering words of encouragement to those who are suffering.
Extending gratitude to those who are assisting others.
Listening to those who are grieving.
Smiling and offering cheer to those who are lonely or bored.

Over the years the Felician Sisters helped your families through many trials and tribulations, while also sharing in your triumphs and joys. Now, we promise you the prayerful support and reassurance of all the Sisters for the days and months ahead

Jenn Kennedy: Love this! I was taught by these Felician Sisters for 12 of my school years, and have worked for them in two of the ministries they founded for 20 years of my professional career (a hospital and a university). These are resourceful, capable and strong women.  So to my friends and family at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, and to friends and faculty at Madonna University who have taught, and are currently training, all of our future nurses, doctors, scientists, emergency managers, police officers and first responders, sign language interpreters, and more...this one is for you.

Judy King Lorenz: I truly appreciate all the Felicia's Sisters have done...particularly in Livonia!

About the Felician Sisters and some brief history of their growth in Livonia

The order's presence in Livonia began when Sister Mary DeSales Tocka bought 320 acres, including a few farm buildings on the Smith homestead.  Today, the property is home to the order's mother house, the Presentation Convent; St. Mary Mercy Hospital; Madonna University; Montessori Center of Our Lady; Angela Hospice; St. Mary Child Care Center; Marywood Nursing Care Center; and Senior Clergy Village.

In 1937, Madonna University (then known as Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Junior College) was established by Mother Mary DeSales Tocka and her council in the Felician Central Convent in Livonia.

St. Mary Mercy Livonia, located at 36475 Five Mile Road provides acute-care medical and health services to our community. The hospital was founded and opened by the Felician Sisters in 1959.

Livonia has a real race for State Representative
August 4th primary
featuring 3 Republicans
Penny Crider\versus
Regina Gargus/versus
Martha Ptashnik

November 3rd
the August 4th winner/versus
Laurie Pohutsky

In only two months at the end of June absentee ballots will be mailed to those Livonia residents who have made application. One race on the ballot will be a most tightly fought race, the Republican primary to decide who will oppose incumbent State Representative Laurie Pohutsky (D). The district is one of the rarely drawn legislative districts that encompasses only one community. Livonia.

From an outsiders view it would appear to be a race between the former district manager for State Senator Patrick Colbeck, Penny Crider, who brings support from the established conservative wing of the Republican Party and a fresh face, a teacher at Churchill High School, with apparently the support of the establishment leadership that has been active in defining the controlling paradigm of the city of Livonia, Martha Ptashnik. A long shot Regina Gargus brings to the table solid Republican credentials, commitment and contacts to the same conservative policies and relationships that Crider holds, although not as visible in the community as Crider.

From all appearances Ptashnik will bring inroads into the group of voters who have not regularly voted in a Republican primary. She needs to capitalize on new primary voters motivating them to vote for her over the other two candidates. She has already received the support of City Council President Kathleen MacIntyre.

Crider needs to capitalize on the established Republican voters and bring them out in a large enough turnout to match the new voters Ptashnik will bring out. Or you could look at this as Plastnik needs to bring out a large enough group of new voters to match the established republican turnout for Crider. At this point Gargus remains the wild card, appealing to the same voters as Crider, dividing up  that side of the ledger and leaving a clear path for Ptashnik.

This will be one interesting election.  Too early to call.

Pohutsky, a surprise primary winner over Livonia School Board Trustee Dan Centers in 2018, went on to defeat long time city councilman Brian Meakin. She has been highly visible in her first year holding 7 Town Halls, 22 coffee hours while knocking on over 17,000 doors in her first year in office. A scientist by trade and an avid interest in environmental issues brings unique qualities to her campaign for re-election.

She will be a difficult candidate to defeat in November but to a large extent this race will  hinge on the way Livonia tilts in the Presidential race. Donald Trump wins and it makes it easier for the Republican to win, The Democrat wins and the wind will be at the back of Laurie Pohutsky.

Buckle up we have a real race on our hands.

Residential Yard Waste pick up put on hold
Yard Waste facility to stay open for residential drop off
FridayMusings wants to share from our Livonia Community that starting Monday, April 13, Green For Life (GFL), Livonia's contracted service provider for curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste pick up, will be temporarily suspending only its curbside yard waste services, in order to protect the health and safety of its employees. Curbside garbage and recycling collection services will continue.

In the meantime, the City of Livonia is extending the operating hours of the yar d waste facility at 32500 Glendale (east of Farmington Road) to accept yard waste from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday (starting the week of April 13). Residents, with proper identification, may bring their yard waste in approved bags and deposit it themselves. Those who choose to use the yard waste facility should be prepared to abide by social distancing and wear a mask.

Life goes on especially with enrollment in college and pursuit of scholarships. Livonia organizations like the Franklin PTA,
Churchill PTA, Michigan PTA, Livonia Kiwanis Early Risers,
Livonia Chamber of Commerce can and will help.
