Unsworth Appointed Interim Fire Chief
John H. Unsworth has been appointed Interim Chief of the Livonia Fire & Rescue effective April 16.
Chief Unsworth has served as Deputy Chief since February of 2019. In his 29-year career, he has risen through the department serving in every rank of the fire service, including Fire Captain, Senior Captain and Battalion Chief.
“Chief Unsworth’s character, talent and leadership provide the bridge we need to move forward and assist in identifying the next Fire Chief for our community,” said Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan. “With his leadership, I am certain we will have a seamless transition.”

Earlier this year, Chief David Heavener announced his intent to retire. It is effective April 15. “I am grateful to Chief Heavener for the exceptional leadership he has provided over the past four years,” Mayor Brosnan said. “His accomplishments are many through his 26 years of service to Livonia. Most recently, he led an outstanding team that successfully answered the call, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by providing testing and vaccines to our community. We are grateful for his leadership.”
The City is currently engaged in a comprehensive competitive selection process, including an assessment center administered by an outside agency.

Livonia Historical Society Helps Fund Grant School Field Trips To Greenmead Historical Park
The Livonia Historical Society Board approved a $1,000 request from Grant Elementary School, Livonia Public Schools, to help second-grade students participate in the “Spend a day at the Newburg Schoolhouse” program.
The Newburg School was built in 1861 and was a part of the Newburg Intersection. This wonderfully restored building allows teachers and students the opportunity to step back in time and experience a school day from long ago.
Arranged by Amy Schlaud, a 2nd-grade teacher, each of the 2nd-grade students will visit Newburgh School. The trips are scheduled for Monday, April 19, through Thursday, April 22.
In addition to Schlaud, other participating 2nd grade teachers are Alena Pascoe, Doreen Byrne, and Lisa Herman.
“The Livonia Historical Society is very pleased to provide this funding to help Grant students learn about the history of Livonia and spend a day recreating education in the ‘“good old days,” said Society Vice President Gene Kramer, a retired Plymouth-Canton educator.
Key financial support was also provided by the Grant School PTA. The Newburg Schoolhouse activity is coordinated by Greenmead Historical Park.
For information about School Field Trips to Greenmead, contact Susan Bailey, Greenmead Tour Coordinator, at (248) 477-7375 or sbailey@livonia.gov

Brandon McCullough ~ Franklin 2000
Livonia City Council Member (current term – January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2023)
I spent my childhood roaming the streets of South Livonia on my 1992 GT Mach One BMX. I was a regular at Wonderland Mall, Cutting Corner, Daly, Bread Basket, Senate Coney Island and too many more to name. I attended elementary school at Cleveland, middle school at Emerson and high school at Franklin.
During my days at Franklin, I was blessed to meet my beautiful wife Kacie, who to this day claims the only reason she agreed to go on a date was that I was the captain of the Franklin Hockey team. She is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Special Education. She loved the education she received from Livonia Public Schools so much she joined the team and is teaching at our alma mater, Franklin High School, in the resource room.
Following my incredible Livonia Public Schools education, I attended Lawrence Tech and obtained a degree in Construction Engineering and graduated with honors.
My professional career really took off in 2008 when I served as the Director of Construction for Habitat for Humanity. During my employment, our affiliate renovated and built over 65 homes across Macomb County providing safe housing for many deserving families. My biggest accomplishment at Habitat was leading a project to create Macomb County’s first LEED for Homes Platinum certified project.
Currently, I serve as the Facilities Manager for the Northville Township with the overall management of the Facilities Management Division. This division is tasked with the operations, capital planning, and construction management for all the township’s facilities and grounds.
My wife and I purchased our family home in Burton Hollow Estates in 2009 and in 2014, we welcomed our one-of-a-kind daughter Harper (Harps) Rose. We are convinced that she will be both the Captain of the USA Women’s Olympic Hockey team and the President of the United States.
