IN 1970, 20 MILLION AMERICANS MOBILIZED TO CALL FOR GREATER PROTECTIONS FOR OUR PLANET.
FridayMusings salutes the people who have given energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to help protect our planet

Happy Earth Day. 50 years in the making. What role will you play in the next 50 years?
The typewriter knows that as America slowly wakes up from a devastating pandemic and we become involved in the new normal he will be giving thought to the environmental issues facing us that did not go away while we stayed home.

Musings will be asking all candidates this year their view on environmental regulations, laws and how our lives are affected.

Our world needs transformational change. It's time for the world to hold sectors accountable for their role in our environmental crisis while also calling for bold, creative, and innovative solutions. This will require action at all levels, from business and investment to city and national government.

That's where you come in: As an individual, you yield real power and influence as a consumer, a voter, and a member of a community that can unite for change.

Don't underestimate your power. When your voice and your actions are united with thousands or millions of others around the world, we create a movement that is inclusive, impactful, and impossible to ignore.

As the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day approaches, the time is long overdue for a global outpouring of energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to create a new plan of action for our planet. Earth Day 2020 is the time for each of us to determine how we can be the catalyst that galvanizes an unparalleled global collaboration.

We can work to broaden the definition of "environment" to include issues that affect our health and our communities, such as greening deteriorated schools, creating green jobs and investment, and promoting activism to stop air and water pollution.

From its very inception, Earth Day has been about civil society mobilization.

In 1970, 20 million individuals - at the time, 10% of the U.S. population - mobilized to call for greater protections for our planet. This became the world's first Earth Day.

In the 49 years since that first Earth Day, citizens have created civically-oriented innovative programs with partners both inside and outside of the environmental movement to tackle new challenges. The environmental campaigns mobilize individuals around the world on issues from voter registration to environmental education.

As we look to 2020 and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, leaders are working with partners around the world to build a historic moment when citizens of the world will rise up in a united call for the creativity, innovation, ambition, and bravery that we need to meet our climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future.

' Together Livonia Cares' initiative supports city's Long-Term Care Facilities

Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan announces the Together Livonia Cares (TLC) program to help support long-term care facilities in the City of Livonia.

"We know that our long-term care facilities have been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak," Mayor Brosnan said. "This program is our concerted effort to ensure these facilities have the resources, training and support they need to navigate the on-going challenges of COVID-19."

Livonia has the second highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and fatalities in Wayne County, behind the City of Detroit.

In a letter to long-term care providers, Mayor Brosnan said the City is prepared to visit every site, bringing the support to meet their needs, from personal protective equipment and sanitization methods to screening programs and isolation plans.

"This virus is particularly insidious because of the way it affects the elderly and at-risk populations," Mayor Brosnan said. "Our TLC initiative stands ready to help protect vulnerable populations and the tireless, frontline employees working to keep our community healthy."

One challenge facing long-term care facilities is the treatment and isolation of residents who are positive for COVID-19.  "We need to be more innovative on a systems-level in isolating positive COVID-19 patients who do not need intensive hospital treatment," Mayor Brosnan said.

"I am strongly urging state officials to use facilities like the Suburban Collection Showplace to isolate residents who might otherwise be a risk of infecting their neighbors in a residential facility," she said.
Helping our Livonia Public Schools as donations are needed to bridge the gap. The digital gap.
SPONSOR a STUDENT!

With the move to online learning for our students, the digital divide in our community has become strikingly apparent. YOU CAN HELP! Go to lpsfoundation.org, click the donate button, and add "digital divide" in the notes.

We currently have 72 students in need of wireless access to engage with their teachers and peers in online learning, and this need continues to grow. With an initial cost of $75 for a hot spot, and $50 per month for wireless access, every student in our community can have equal access to education.

We have a wonderful community donor who has anonymously covered the month of May for each student. You can sponsor a student for the cost of a hot spot and wireless for the remainder of the year for $125! If that doesn't work for you, please consider donating to the cause. Any amount will make a difference!

Amanda Walworth, past President of the Livonia Jaycees offers her support, "As we move to online education for the rest of the school year, please consider supporting LPS students who don't have access to internet by donating through the LPS Education Foundation. Every donation helps!"
Musings provides background information on 5th candidate to announce
for Michigan 11th Congressional District.
FridayMusings will continue to share the announcements of candidates seeking office in 2020. Frank Acosta recently announced his campaign for Congress in the Michigan 11th District. As was done with the other candidates the following information was taken directly from the candidate's web site without editing:

I am running for Congress because the current Democrat majority in the House of Representatives is leading this country off a cliff. Rather than legislate, they only produce media sound bites. They have abdicated their power to pass laws in lieu of pushing the President to issue Executive Orders. When the sitting President has been a Democrat, they cheer or look the other way when bad things happen. When the President has been a Republican, they use the Federal Courts to impede his actions. This is especially acute with regards to immigration.

Frank Acosta has been a resident of the State of Michigan for 36 years and lived in Northville since 2013. He was the President of Video Tape Plus after working for Fuji Photo Film Corporation for more than 18 years. Frank was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He served in the U.S.Army from 1967-1969 in the Communications Center in Darmstadt, Germany.

His mother was born in Dr Arroyo Nuevo Leon Mexico in 1904 and his father, a first generation Mexican-American, was born in San Angelo, Texas in 1899. His parents taught Frank that with hard work and discipline, he could shape his own destiny in the great American Melting Pot.

Frank speaks Spanish and understands the beacon of hope the United States represents, especially in the western hemisphere.

His platform:

Respect Immigrants That Have Followed The Law,  Practice Intelligent Immigration & Border Security,   Support Right-To-Life Initiatives,   Defend The Bill of Rights, Appoint Constitutional Originalist Judge,   Promote Federalism & Subsidiarity to Assure Smaller  Government, Lower Taxes & Less Regulation,   Incentivize Free Market Healthcare Solutions,  Execute Intelligent Climate Policy,  Leverage Fair Trade Practices To Achieve Free Trade Objectives
