  Chris Last, the Urban Forester talked to a friend that is a nurse, "who through our conversation, compelled my family to do what so many others have done. That led to a conversation with Tom the assistant manager at the Livonia Plymouth Rd Subway. Together Tom and I made a deal. Today my grandson and I delivered 60, 6' various Subway subs and all the fixens to the ER folks at St. Mary. The reaction from one nurse and Security Guard said 'thank you for a momentary sigh and a treat we all look forward to' "
Chris Last continues "I cant say enough good things about this guy. He wanted  to make sure it kept sanitary and wrapped every sub separately rather than do the 'party subs'. The "fixins" were also done in such a way that would not cause cross contamination. Even put multiple types of dressings in separate containers. This all started with one visit to get a sub for myself. From that came this.
"Personally, I feel we as Michiganders, heck Americans will do what we always do. Get back up on our feet and go forward. You can't keep a great Country down. Stay strong folks!"
Maureen Miller Brosnan posts this picture with a statement that "This is what makes Livonia special. Yesterday I got to take delivery on a gift of N95 equivalent masks for our first responders, nursing homes and senior living centers. Livonia residents Mike and Jules Garavaglia purchased and donated 3000 of them to Livonia."
Our Livonia Community Facebook posting offered a "Thank you to Livonia residents Mike and Jules Garavaglia who donated 3,000 N95 equivalent masks to the City of Livonia, for distribution by Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan and members of the Livonia City Council and County Commissioner Terry Marecki to first-responders of their choice.

Using ZOOM to gather informed information and to keep public meetings public.
Livonia does it well. Citizens just need to learn how to use the new system. |
 City business continues to take place in Livonia and actually across the state. Public business takes place on Zoom in most municipalities. This can at times make it more difficult for citizens to attend meetings however the city should be applauded for through an aggressive use of Zoom.
In most cases ZOOM works perfectly. In most cases. In some it makes it tough to participate at the level some citizens would like.
An example of public business that might see more citizen participation then in the different and difficult environment we are in today is the proposal to rezone the property just south of Six Mile on the West side of Farmington. The property in question sits in front of a medical office building. The parking lot in front of this building is proposed for a Taco Bell leaving the medical building in place.
The Planning Commission turned the rezoning down by a vote of 6 - 1. If Musings is any indication the residents of the neighborhood immediately to the south of the rezoning are not in favor of a Taco Bell being constructed in a parking lot with a new drive exciting onto Six Mile and the existing exit onto Farmington Road.
One resident of the neighborhood who did not want his name used says that "when you go through the drive through you can practically reach out and toss the order into the bedroom of the house next door."
Another resident questioned the traffic on Farmington Road and how a car exiting from the Taco Bell can merge with the heavy late afternoon traffic.
These residents will have an opportunity to make their case at the public hearing in a couple of weeks.
The property is being proposed for rezoning by Pastor 4G's LLC.

No idea how this rezoning will be handled but knowing our council this typewriter feels comfortable that all their due diligence will be taken into consideration and a decision best for Livonia will be made.

Stevens Urges Trump Administration to Support Nursing Homes, Long-Term Care Facilities
|
 Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) led a group of 16 Members of Congress calling on U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar to ensure that federal funding, testing capacity, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are being allocated to nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
Senior facilities in Wayne and Oakland Counties, the two counties that fall within the borders of Michigan's 11th Congressional District, have been hit particularly hard by COVID-19. According to a recent analysis by the Detroit Free Press, 35% of COVID-19 deaths in Wayne County were nursing home residents, while 92 senior care facilities in Oakland County have at least one confirmed COVID-19 case.
In the letter, the Members urged the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to allocate funding for nursing homes and long-term care facilities in the CARES Act Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund, and increase access to testing for these facilities as part of the Administration's COVID-19 Strategic Testing Plan, required under the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act.
"Nursing homes are facing tremendous strain on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, managing the spread of the virus among their own residents and staff, providing regional surge capacity, and rehabilitating patients recovering from COVID-19," wrote the Members. "At the same time, nursing homes are facing staffing shortages and experiencing serious difficulties accessing personal protective equipment and testing supplies. [...] We must work together to ensure our long-term care providers are best equipped to turn the tide of new infections and continue saving lives, and ensure the millions of older Americans and adults with disabilities that they serve are not forgotten."
This letter is supported by Leading Age and the American Health Care Association. 
In addition to Congresswoman Stevens, the letter was signed by Reps. John Larson (CT-01), Susan Wild (PA-07), Paul Tonko (NY-20), Dwight Evans (PA-03), Gerald Connolly (VA-11), Kendra Horn (OK-05), Dan Kildee (MI-05), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Annie Kuster (NH-02), Tom O'Halleran (AZ-01), Bill Pascrell (NJ-09), Bill Foster (IL-11), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jerry McNerney (CA-09), and Jimmy Panetta (CA-20).

"Dear Secretary Azar,
As we continue working together to protect the health and safety of our frontline healthcare workers and the patients they serve, we urge you to ensure targeted funding, testing, and PPE is being allocated to nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
Nursing homes are facing tremendous strain on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, managing the spread of the virus among their own residents and staff, providing regional surge capacity, and rehabilitating patients recovering from COVID-19. At the same time, nursing homes are facing staffing shortages and experiencing serious difficulties accessing personal protective equipment and testing supplies. Additionally, older adults are the most susceptible to COVID-19 infection and mortality, with people over the age of 65 accounting for 80 percent of all deaths associated with COVID-19, according to a recent report from the CDC.
Without robust and immediate support, nursing homes and long-term care facilities may be forced to close their doors. We cannot let this happen; we cannot let them fail.
As such, we urge you to allocate funding for nursing homes and long-term care facilities in the CARES Act Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund, and increase access to testing and PPE for nursing homes and long-term care facilities in your COVID-19 Strategic Testing Plan, required under the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act.
We must work together to ensure our long-term care providers are best equipped to turn the tide of new infections and continue saving lives and ensure the millions of older Americans and adults with disabilities that they serve are not forgotten."

Rose Kachnowski I knew several of the Felician sisters that passed away and knew Sr Vicky very well. This was extremely hard to take. Praying that the rest will recover and stay safe.

Thanks Bill for the wonderful tribute to Mom. If there is one thing that is certain, it's that our Moms cared deeply about the education and well being of the children of this community and they fought fiercely to protect them. They were also warriors in the fight for social justice, minority rights and womens issues at a time that it wasn't popular to do so. Your Mom was her role model, mentor and dearest friend. May they both rest in peace...

Nancy Rogers Farquharson I still remember how exciting it was to have that Awrey's truck pull up to your house. Sometimes my mom used to let me get on it and pick something out. I can almost smell it now. Our Awrey's truck delivery man was Mr. Bingham. Once the trucks were done he opened a gas station at 5 Mile and Levan.

Just a reminder that the City continues to seek contributions of
personal protective equipment and other supplies for first responders
and medical personnel. Donations can be dropped off weekdays at the
Kirksey Recreation Center from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Highlight: Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church delivers over 1,000 "Blessings in a Bag" to the Kirksey Recreation Center to be distributed to St. Mary Mercy Hospital personnel.
- Livonia residents Mary Ann and Julie Totchuk donate 145 handsewn masks to the City. The masks will be distributed based on need to Livonia first responders and to staff and residents at long-term care facilities in the City through the Together Livonia Cares initiative.
