Joe Gilligan, owner of Dough Joe's Artisan Chocolates, stopped by St. Mary Mercy Hospital today to drop off an entire platter of his homemade artisan chocolates in honor of Mother's Day and as a thank you to the staff at the hospital. Or as he said "Dropping off some chocolates to the brave nurses, doctors, and other health care workers at St Mary's in Livonia. Keep up the great work, we are all in this together. Happy Mother's day everyone."

Do you have any for FridayMusings? Nah, you did right by taking them to St. Mary's.
Challenger Martha Ptashnik continues to pick up endorsements for the August 4th republican primary election. Incumbent State Representative Laurie Pohutsky is gearing up for the November election with another environmental endorsement. Penny Crider is hosting a virtual fund raiser.

Only one Democratic candidate has filed for state representative. Laurie Pohutsky, incumbent, will face the winner of the August 4th Republican Primary.

Clean Water Action is happy to announce our endorsement of incumbent State Representative
Laurie Pohutsky for Michigan's 19th State House District! Here is what Clean Water Action says about their endorsement:

"Representative Pohutsky has consistently stood up for her constituents and stuck to her convictions, and has quickly become one of our strongest environmental champions in Lansing. After just one year in the State House, Representative Pohutsky earned Clean Water Action's Champion of the Great Lakes Award for her legislative advocacy.

"When she was elected in 2018, Representative Pohutsky brought her experience as an environmental scientist with her to Lansing. She has introduced bills to repeal Michigan's No Stricter Than Federal law and strengthen public water protections, and has advocated for policies to hold polluters accountable for the contamination they create.

"From fighting major polluters in her district to standing with Attorney General Dana Nessel to shut down Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline, Representative Pohutsky has established an incredibly strong track record of protecting our Great Lakes, drinking water and public health.

"We know that  Representative Laurie Pohutsky, House District 19 will continue to fiercely advocate for protecting our water and holding polluters accountable. Clean Water Action is proud to endorse her and we look forward to continuing to work with her in 2021 and beyond!"

In the Republican primary there are three candidates seeking the Republican nomination to run against incumbent State Representative Laurie Pohutsky, Martha Ptashnik, Penny Crider and Regina Gargos. As candidates make endorsements available Musings will provide that information to our readers. Comments on each nomination are provided by the candidate:

"Team Ptasnik continues to pick up steam! Thank you to Livonia City Treasurer Lynda Scheel for your support! Lynda has been a model public servant and careful steward of Livonia's tax dollars. As Livonia's State Representative, I will work to enact common sense conservative principles of lower taxes, smaller government, and more freedom."

Martha Ptashnik, candidate for the Republican nomination for State Representative, District 19 writes to "Thank former State Representative John Pastor for your support! John has been a conservative leader in the Republican Party at both the state and local level for decades, in addition to being a Livonia family business owner. "

Penny Crider is hosting a virtual town hall and fundraiser, May 14 at 6:30 until 8:00. Check it out:

The Governor's Stay at Home Order has obviously put a major barrier in front of my getting out and meeting with many of you regarding my run for State Representative in Livonia. So we are asking you to join us for a special Town Hall where you can ask me questions you feel are important to this campaign and more importantly, the people of Livonia.

We are also in extreme need for funding for this campaign due to the fact we have not been able to host public fundraising events, so we'll also be asking you to give online if you can, during this event.

Bring your dinner, a cold beverage and your family and please join us online for this important event in the life of my candidacy. I look forward to hearing from you. The link to the event is below.

Our Livonia Service Clubs do not take a day of in offering up support
for our hometown hospital. That would be St. Mary Mercy on Mother's Day.

Dave Stechholz, Past President of the Livonia Rotary Club along with Matt Collins, President of the Livonia Lions Club, set up a Mothers Day Display in the north Lobby of SMML at 6:30am this morning, just in time for the beginning of the morning shift change which lasted about 90 minutes.

Collins explains that the "generosity was well received by the SMML Staff, who expressed their thanks and appreciation for the overwhelming support shown by the community service clubs and by the community during these unprecedented times."

Stechholz offered up a  "thank you to the front line medical staff at SMML.  Wishing them and all mothers a happy mothers' day!"

Livonia Service Clubs are up to the task. Every day.

But yet as more Families struggle to hold it together while the economy tanks. More Families find themselves in need of food and other essentials.  The Blind and Visually Impaired....The Deaf and Hard of Hearing. . .special Needs children. . .all in need of more support.

The Livonia Lions Club understands the situation and for our part, we are doing what we can to help those that  "WE SERVE", especially those organizations that are close by and closest to our hearts.   ON April 14th, the Livonia Lions Club unanimously approved early donations to approximately 30 organizations that "We Serve" with special emphasis on local
organizations that...

1) Provide food and related support to our citizens: Redford Interfaith Relief, Cares in Farmington and Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger

2) Help our special needs children: Seedlings Braille Books for Children, Sweet Dreamzzz and the Michigan
Foster Closet of Western  Wayne County

3) Sponsor programs that provide therapy and support to those in need: HorsesHealHearts, Bear Lake Camp and the Penrickton Center

It is incumbent on all Service Clubs from around the corner and across the country to answer the call and maximize your efforts to support your community in whatever ways that you can. Maximizing Donations Help. Increase Service Levels Help. Partnering with other Service Organizations on larger projects Help. Being observant and initiating service actions Help. Look around you, find new and inventive ways to serve your community and continue to move forward. Need Knows No Boundary, especially now.

The Livonia Lions Club will continue to serve in any and every way that we can...
because that is what we do.... "WE SERVE".

Our neighbors react to some of the articles in Musings

Irene Coons  I worked as a RN for Angela Hospice back in 1995 for about a year. They opened a second inpatient unit at a LTC (HCR Manor Care) facility in Plymouth. Hospice is a great option. They also had a pediatric program called "Our Nest is Best" to keep kids with terminal illnesses at home versus going into an inpatient unit. Glad she is still doing well!

Mike Rudell  My mother was here for a brief time before she died. Angela Hospice was wonderful~

Brian Fogarty  Thank you for sharing!

Linda Taylor Fry My mother helped train Sister at Hospice of Michigan ... many many many years ago.

Heather Azure Pretty amazing lady! I started my career as a hospice nurse at Angela in 2007. Truly the best start and foundation I could have hoped for!

Jennie Macoit Angela Hospice was there for my sister-in-law, I'm grateful for their ministry.

Richard H Woltman   My fingers are crossed. (Gotta stay on the Higher and Wiser path).

Scott Paschen   Forget funding. Open up business for God's sake

Alan C. Helmkamp Needed advocacy for our city. Appreciate the leadership.

Brandon McCullough The use of the CDBG formula for COVID is absurd. This is something that needs to be corrected yesterday. I have faith that our congressional leaders can get the funding we need. Human life is more important than partisan infighting.

Let's attend a virtual town hall with Kym Worthy

Nearly half of all Michigan COVID-19 patients are now considered recovered. Almost 49% of all those who have tested positive in Michigan are still alive 30 days since the onset of their symptoms. This is the definition of recovery used by the state. In total, 22,686 individuals are now listed as recovered.

Dan MacIver offers up a slice of Livonia History.

Proud sponsor of the Detroit Red Wings v Livonia All-stars coming to town Aug 16, 3:00.

Democratic Senators, Attorney General, Agree: No Guns in Capitol
Sens. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia), Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit), Erika Geiss (D-Taylor), and Marshall Bullock (D-Detroit) issued the following statement after Attorney General Dana Nessel advised today that the Michigan State Capitol Commission has the authority to prohibit guns from the Capitol:

"The Capitol is the building of the people, and it should be a place where everyone feels safe and secure, no matter whether they are children coming for an educational opportunity or adults exercising their First Amendment rights. The recent intimidation tactics used by protesters have been deeply disturbing, with their actions simply having gone too far. While we believe in and support Second Amendment rights, we also need to ensure the safety of those working in, and visiting, our Capitol Building.

"Our State Capitol should be treated no differently than other government and federal buildings, which also restrict guns. We are grateful to Attorney General Dana Nessel for weighing in on this matter and remain hopeful that those on the Capitol Commission will do the right thing and make the safety and security of all who enjoy our Capitol Building their top priority by prohibiting guns from entering it."
