Newburgh Lake Cleanup--water and shoreline
|
Newburgh Lake Water Cleanup this Saturday, May 14 from 9 - 12. Meet up at Livonia's Newburgh Pointe boat launch area.
Details: Newburgh Lake, a 152-acre impoundment of the Middle Rouge River in Livonia, Michigan is an oasis in the city!
The Lake is home to many plants and animals including bald eagles, egrets, herons, and muskrats. This jewel needs our help! There is a lot of trash in the water along the shorelines. So Mike Rudell is hosting a cleanup!
One of the ways to do this is via canoe or kayak, so he is looking for helpers willing to do so. He can use people onshore as well. Come for an hour or two or stay for three with me. Packing his lunch for a picnic after. Message him with questions or for more information.
Hope to see you there and please help spread the word by sharing this post, even if you can't come! Please do let him know if you are planning on coming. Please bring gloves and a few trash bags.

Hey Livonia a New generation, the third, takes over at Bill and Rod’s Appliance Store.
|
A Livonia appliance store in operation for six decades is transitioning to the third generation of family ownership. Joe Legato will officially take control of Bill and Rod’s Appliance Store later this month from his retiring parents, Kim and Linda. The 18,000-square-foot store has been located on Middlebelt between Five Mile and Six Mile roads since 2013.
“It has long been a dream of mine to help my team prosper while helping the Livonia community grow,” said Legato, 36. “We will continue to expand our service and offerings to our customers.”
The business started as an appliance repair shop in a Garden City residential garage by two men, one of them Linda’s father, Alyousis “Rod” Rodriquez. Rodriquez eventually took control of the business and moved a store on Middelbelt Road in Livonia in 1965. He was stricken by cancer and died in 1975, leaving the business in the hands of Kim, who was a 22-year-old delivery truck driver.
Two years later, after Linda completed college, she married Kim, and, together, they took control of the store. They immediately encountered trouble and discovered an employee embezzlement that left the business filing for bankruptcy.
They overcame those early struggles and grew the business. They were housed in three different Middelbelt spots before moving into their current location. They also acquired a 19,000-square-foot warehouse in Livonia that provides quicker delivery to customers with more room to stock washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, outdoor cooking equipment, and more. The operation employs 40 people for appliance sales, parts, and repairs, serving a customer base that reaches Wayne and Oakland counties.
“I was working here all three times I went into labor, and we had all three of our kids at St. Mary’s Hospital (Deanna, Joe, and Tony),” Linda said. “It is going to be different for us in retirement.”
The younger Legato worked as a kid at the store, but he started working full time with his parents after college graduation in 2008.
The couple plans to spend more time with their six grandchildren, travel, and tend to their expansive garden at their Milford home.
During Kim and Linda’s final days of work, the store plans some special events around normal business hours to give customers a chance to bid the couple well as they head off into retirement.
“After that,” Joe joked, “when I call mom, I will talk to her as mom, and not about the store.”
