Two years ago two pieces of campaign literature were circulated criticizing candidates for ostensibly supporting Livonia becoming just like San Francisco and that these candidates supported gay rights.
The two candidatestargeted? Brandon McCullough and Maureen Brosnan.
Those campaign flyers have no business in Livonia politics. It is just plain wrong and my hope is that there will not be a repeat this year.
We are a diverse community with among other actvities a chapter of PFLAG uniting Livonia parents, families, and allies with people who are lesbian and gay under the leadership of Jen Noricks, April Gradowski, Kimberlee Strzempka, and Debbie Yates.
I enjoy reading each day one particular facebook post by a Livonia gay resident and enjoy his almost daily kayak trips in the Detroit River. Skills I will never have but can live vicariously as he travels the waterways of southeast Michigan.
For most of the 26 years I lived in Plymouth my go-to printers were two gay men who lived in Livonia and it seemed we spent more conversations concerned about the condition of lawns and landscaping. Same as mine.
We are a diverse hometown and I am pleased to have pride in our diversity. It is my hope that this year the group that sent out anti-diversity literature two years ago to defeat candidates will realize it just does not work. Nor should it.
