First Round of Absentee Ballots
have been delivered to the post office

FridayMusings endorsement review for those voting and receiving their absentee ballots:
|
State Senate
5th District
Dayna Polehanki
Dayna Polehanki (D) incumbent from Livonia , is being challenged in the Democratic Party primary by Velma Jean Overman (D) from Inkster, the winner of which will be one of three
Republicans Emily Bauman (R), Leonard Scott Jr. (R) or
Jody M. Rice-White (R).
FridayMusings strongly endorses Senator Dayna Polehanki and encourages voters in her district to turn out in large numbers, voting in the Democratic primary, and is joined in that endorsement by Livonia Mayor Maureen Brosnan, Westland Mayor Bill Wild, County Commissioner Glenn Anderson, UAW, MEA, Mi Nurses Association, and the Sierra Club.
Polehanki deserves a second term but first must win the primary election August 2nd. Residents of southwest Livonia, Westland, Inkster and Canton would be well served with the re-election of Polehanki.
For those voting in the Republican Primary you will be well served by voting Jody M. Rice-White, a known activist for senior issues.

State Senate
6th District
Vicki Barnett
Vicki Barnett (D), is in a primary election with 3 Democrats, Mary Cavanaugh (D), Betty Jean Alexander (D), Darryl D. Brown (D), the winner of which will face Republican Ken Crider in November.
As there is no Republican primary FridayMusings strongly encourages a vote in the Democratic primary for Vicki Barnett, a solid candidate, former Mayor of Farmington, with strong credentials as a State Representative. She knows the way around Lansing and with her local strength on community needs Barnett will hit the job running.
|
County Commissioner
12th District
Glenn Anderson
Glenn Anderson (D) could be back working with Livonia residents on County issues. The new Wayne County districts provide Livonia with two County Commissioners, former State Senator, current County Commissioner Glenn Anderson, and County Commissioner Terry Marecki.
As Marecki is unopposed in both the primary and general elections the largest part of Livonia will be in the new district represented by Anderson, whose November opponent will be Republican William J. Collop.
Anderson is not running against Terry Marecki. They represent two distinctive districts. With a win by Anderson we will have two Commissioners who know Livonia and have proven they understand Livonia's issues, Anderson served Livonia for 8 years as State Senator.

Ballot Proposals to date
Road millage renewal
Jail Millage renewal
FridayMusings is joined by the Livonia Chamber of Commerce in supporting the Livonia road millage renewal.
FridayMusings supports Proposition J, the Wayne County Jail Millage Renewal
|
Wayne County Sheriff
Raphael Washington (D) incumbent was endorsed by FridayMusings as well as Commissioner Terry Marecki, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Livonia Mayor Maureen Brosnan, Northville Mayor Brian Trumbull, Van Buren Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara, and most of the city/township chief officers throughout Wayne County.
Although Musings endorsed Washington early on there are reservations about his character that came out with the allegations of sexual harassment. Yes, these were years ago and some complaints were withdrawn while others were denied by investigations.
If these complaints disturb you then the other alternative would be Walter Epps, a strong candidate in his own rights.
Musing's strong endorsement for Washington is now a weak endorsement but one nevertheless.

United States Congress
Rashida Tlaib
Rashida Tlaib (D) incumbent, is being challenged by Janice M. Winfrey (D)
Kelly Garrett (D) in the Democratic Primary with the winner facing one of three Republicans, James Hooper, Steven Ellliott, or Hassan Nehme.
For those voting in the Democratic Primary this August 2nd FridayMusings endorses Rashida Tlaib and in the Republican Primary Livonia resident James Hooper.
Tlaib is endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, SEIU, Michigan Teamsters #43, Planned Parenthood,
Jewish Voice for Peace, UAW, Sierra Club, AFSCME Council 25, among others.
Tlaib is a controversial member of the United States Congress, but you cannot be a leader without taking stands on issues that not everyone agrees with.
But two reasons for her re-election are 1) Tlaib works at taking on fights for community needs, at standing up for individuals having trouble with federal programs, and 2) Tlaib puts residents first with proven results.
Tlaib represents Detroit as the base of her district, and she represents Detroit well. FridayMusings fully expects Tlaib to be visible in our hometown Livonia, listening to our needs to determine how she can help bring funding to our hometown and standing up for our neighbors.
Musings expects Livonia residents to spend time with Tlaib, expressing views on the issues affecting us, just as Musings expects Congresswoman Tlaib to spend time with Livonia residents listening to needs and concerns.
FridayMusings encourages Livonia residents voting in the Democratic primary to vote to re-elect Rashida Tlaibb for Congress.

Pride Flag to Fly at City Hall
Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan announced that, in partnership with the Livonia Human Relations Commission, the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag will fly at Livonia City Hall for the first time in recognition of Pride Month on June 27.
The Flag will be raised at a ceremony at 12 p.m. This event will build on the work the City of Livonia is doing to ensure our residents’ inclusive values are reflected in the City as a workplace and community.
“This will be the first time the City of Livonia will be recognizing Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ Livonians who are a key part of what makes this community special,” said Mayor Brosnan.
“While we know that raising the Pride Flag does not reflect the views of everyone in our community, the Human Relations Commission encouraged Mayor Brosnan to take this important step in recognizing the value of the LGBTQ+ community in Livonia,” said Human Relations Commission Chair Rich Glover.
“As leaders of this City, we have a responsibility to take every step that makes Livonia a community anyone can be proud to call home,” said Mayor Brosnan. “Through flying the Pride Flag, we take one such step in advancing the values of our inclusive, welcoming community.”

Ken Crider Republican candidate for
6th District State Senate
|
FridayMusings likes to stay on top of issues being addressed by candidates, both which were endorsed by Musings and those not endorsed. This particular post caught my attention as Ken and Penny Crider have been active in the RTL movement as long as I have known them. So his non-endorsement by RTL raises some eyebrows:
This was the endorsement mailer Ken Crider sent to
RIGHT TO LIFE MICHIGAN for them to mail out to their list after they endorsed him in 2014.
Today, in the 2022 campaign, Crider says he "can't get their endorsement." Why you ask? I didn't change they did."
