AlphaUSA has partnered with LITES, a two-week residential program created by Kettering University to introduce young women who will complete 11th grade by July 1st to what engineers and scientists do and how they improve people's lives through math, science, and technology to find solutions to human problems.
AlphaUSA is providing Alissa Kellaway, shown here with Clarenceville Assistant Principal Tracey Stevenson, and teacher Deb Kummer, with a scholarship to attend LITES this summer. Alissa hopes to attend Kettering when she graduates in 2023. She will be a senior at Clarenceville High School this Fall.
Below are some of the opportunities participants will have:
- See how engineers help prevent injuries by designing airbags and child car seats and testing them with crash test dummies.
- Learn how engineers repair joints, limbs, and organs by making replacements that are functional and durable.
- Explore environmental challenges using science and engineering.
- Solve crimes by combining science and technology.
- Learn how to change the world through science and engineering.
- Opportunities to make new friends who love math and science.

The typewriter is getting in shape for the inaugural Tour De Livonia. I fully expect to be on hand for the start at Bicentennial Park, on September 18th.
But one condition. Make sure there is a SAG truck following as I might ride 2 miles tops. Actually, I am going to work on making one mile.
I am going to try it. Come on out and join me.
Cycling enthusiasts can choose from the 17-mile course (ages 16+) at 8 a.m. or the 7-mile course (all ages) at 8:30 a.m. as they cycle through parks, golf courses, neighborhoods, and past notable Livonia landmarks.
Helmets are highly recommended for all participants especially for the typewriter. I fell the first time on my new bike.
Proceeds will benefit Livonia Kids and Families.
Register by September 9 to secure your t-shirt tourdelivonia.org
Cost is $30 per person for the 17-mile course and $20 for the 7-mile course.
Sponsored by AlphaUSA, Healthy Livonia, Livonia Parks and Recreation, Livonia Police, and Livonia Kids and Families.

Livonia Kids and Families steps up to the plate and adopts 3 Baseball diamonds for the oldest (1958) league in Livonia
|
We are looking for volunteers this Saturday, July 2nd, 9-12, to clear out and enhance three Devon-Aire baseball diamonds.
Brandon McCullough has partnered with the typewriter and Livonia Kids & Family to coordinate the renovation of these diamonds.
|
Livonia Kids and Families stepped up to the plate and committed the funding necessary to start the process of grooming the diamonds.
One individual in the community has offered to provide equipment like bats and balls. Heading out to Dick's to pick the equipment up on Friday.
Yet another Livonia business stepped up and offered to make up the difference if the funding of LKF did not cover the materials for grooming.
Parks & Recreation has requested bids for a company to install new fencing on diamond #2 and they hope it will be completed before the end of summer, which should improve the playability and safety of that field.
16 yards of special infield dirt has been ordered and will hopefully be dropped off Thursday or Friday.
We still need
1.shovels
2.rakes
3.wheelbarrows
Oh, and 36 doughnuts for volunteers.
Community members upon hearing the news jumped in with reactions.
Linda Eagle-Trudell, Franklin High School graduate, offers "Thanks for sharing the piece on DeconAire Softball! Steven and I spent 27 years being board members, coaches, parents, etc. working with them. We broadcast the All-Star games on MetroVision/Spectrum as tape-delayed.
"Originally one diamond at the corner of Sunset and Robert Dr., it expanded into 3 divisions and 3 diamonds on the back of the former Jefferson Elementary School.
"Every night from 5-8 pm there were ball games or practices going on and a huge neighborhood free picnic for the All-Star games on the last Saturday in July.
"This is a wonderful organization and I’m happy for the community support to spiff it up again.
"We can ferry water coolers down."
Blake Jarvis is bringing some tools to help as needed with benches & backstop.
Mike Ladwig says he will be joining us on Saturday.
