Marcus Lewis is the clinic director at Trinity Health Probility Physical Therapy — Southeast Livonia, which recently opened in the community. He holds a doctoral degree in physical therapy from the University of Michigan-Flint and helps many kinds of patients with their rehabilitation needs. Lewis was kind enough to speak with Friday Musings about the services his office offers and how patients can benefit.
Q: How have things been going so far at the brand new facility in Livonia? And what kind of work do you do out of it?
Lewis: Everything has been great so far. It opened this past November, and it is a massive upgrade for both the staff members and our patients.
We specialize in manual therapy, as well as therapeutic exercise. We treat all types of orthopedic conditions and musculoskeletal issues of the back, neck, knee, hip, shoulder, foot, ankle, elbow, wrist, and more.
Q: What is manual therapy, and how does it differ from other kinds of therapy?
Lewis: Patients lay on the table and we provide myofascial release, joint mobilization and other types of therapies.
Myofascial release focuses on the pain our patients feel from the tissues that support their muscles. Joint mobilization helps improve the range of motion and reduce pain in the joints. The physical therapist applies pressure at targeted areas at different levels of intensity on the joint.
Q: What kinds of patients do you treat?
Lewis: We treat all types of patients — predominantly we are an outpatient orthopedic organization, so we treat everything from musculoskeletal pain to balance and vestibular dysfunctions, such as vertigo and people suffering from post-concussion syndrome. I personally enjoy treating runners, as I teach a course nationally on it and am a runner myself.
Q: What can patients expect if they book an appointment with you?
Lewis: The entire physical therapy session will last about 90 minutes for the first evaluation, and then it will be 60 minutes for every follow-up session. Most patients will see us 2-3 times per week for about an hour each session until they are fully healed.
Q: Why will those reading this find your services beneficial?
Lewis: We give each patient 30 minutes of uninterrupted one-on-one time. They get our full, undivided attention for a whole half hour, so they will receive a fully detailed plan of attack moving forward with whatever is ailing them. That type of attention is rare in our field, but we want our patients feeling better sooner rather than later. It’s important we give the patient exactly what they need to heal so that they can get back to living a pain-free life and doing the things they love.
