Council votes 4-3 denying discussion on civil rights protections in Livonia
It seemed like a simple request by City Councilman Brandon McCullough to have the Council begin a conversation on civil rights and human rights in an upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting.
After the issue was brought up the Council voted and defeated the referral by a 4-3 vote with Rob Donovic, Scott Morgan, Kathleen McIntyre, and Scott Bahr voting NO. Council President Jim Jolly, Vice President Laura Toy, and McCullough voted YES.
The motion to have a discussion on civil and human rights in the Committee of the Whole was denied.
According to McCullough, this in his opinion was one way "as local elected leaders to start a conversation."
The Council also voted 4-0 to refer the issue of City Hall flag raising to the Law Department for consideration of an ordinance that would require a 7-0 vote of the City Council before a flag could be raised at City Hall, clearly a reaction to the recent 2-day flag raising of a Pride flag. The 4 Council members supporting the referral to the Law Department asking about a flag-raising ordinance included Rob Donovic, Scott Morgan, Kathleen McIntyre, and Scott Bahr.
The same four who did not want a discussion on civil and human rights were now asking for an ordinance to restrict flag-raising unless a vote of the Council was unanimous.
On so many levels this is wrong. Jolly, Toy, and McCullough are to be commended for their stand on both issues.
Refusing a discussion at the City Council level on civil and human rights is antithetical to the rights we have to life, liberty and security as American citizens.
