Civic Center Senior Center Barbeque was a hit. And the food was so good.

Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan called it a "Fantastic event from the oh so generous team at Alpha USA!" And it was that on the last day of August with a room full of fun-loving seniors at the Civic Park Senior Center enjoying their choice of proteins, chicken, steak burger, pulled pork, along with cole slaw and potato salad.

It seems that AlphaUSA enjoys treating folks to lunch at the end of summer. The food was catered by Celebrity Catering with executive chef Matt Jenkins (pictured left with Leiby Dardas-Kluck), former team chef for the Detroit Tigers. On the food service line, there was police chief Thomas Goralski, Mayor Brosnan, and Chairman of the AlphaUSA Board Cate Strumbos.

The typewriter and bodyguard helped serve food to seniors needing help taking food to their table. Our pay? One delicious steakburger, lots of great conversation with fun-loving seniors. Thanks, Alpha for once again providing the template for Livonia's quality of life for all ages.

Livonia Teens Save Two Lives in

Heroic House Fire Rescue

Three Livonia teens are being hailed as heroes after their quick actions saved the lives of two people on Monday, Aug. 29. Ethan Morche, Chase Adams and Colin Anderson were driving down Ellen Drive in Livonia when they saw smoke and flames emerging through the roof of a garage. The trio stopped the car and quickly jumped into action, fearing that people could be trapped inside the home.

Chase and Ethan called 9-1-1 to report the fire. After hearing someone shouting from inside the home, Chase and Ethan tried to enter the home through the front door but could not get in. They went around the back of the house and found a sliding door that was unlocked. Colin remained outside the house to alert Livonia Fire & Rescue that there were people inside, including his friends.

Chase helped one of the occupants exit the home. He called out to Ethan and didn’t get a response. Chase re-entered the home and helped Ethan escort another resident to safety.

"We couldn't be more proud of these young men who remained calm, did the right thing, and were directly responsible for saving the lives of two of their neighbors,” said Livonia Fire & Rescue Chief Robert Jennison. “They could have just driven by, but instead they decided to take action, and stopped this incident from becoming a tragedy resulting in loss of life."

The teens and occupants of the home were all evaluated on scene and released with minor smoke inhalation.

All three young men attend Churchill High School in Livonia.

Livonia Equity & Anti-Racism Network

reports on their work in our hometown

LEARN is a part of this non-profit organization which was established for members and businesses to learn, take action, and form alliances for equity and peace in our community.

L.E.A.R.N. focuses on 3 Areas of Priority:

  • Public Safety for All
  • Public Education & Engagement
  • Community Building & Inclusion - which includes volunteerism and community service.

Here are a few ways in their words that they have served Livonia:

  • We raised $1,647 to purchase children's books with diverse characters/authors and donated them to Livonia Public Library to make sure every child can access "windows and mirrors" through diverse stories.

  • Delivered "love" to seniors in nursing homes in the form of 180 hand-made Valentines.

  • Collected and delivered more than 175lbs of new and unused personal and home care items to Redford Interfaith Relief to support them in their mission.

  • Hosted a free virtual community conversation with a panel of family therapists on school shootings and their impact on the mental health of our children and families.

  • Provided 313 children with more than 1,200 gifts designed to build self-esteem, empathy, and appreciation for diversity through our Celebrating Diversity Holiday Gifting Drive.

  • Provided backpacks and school supplies to over 100 students and Classroom Boxes full of goodies to Livonia Public Schools and Clarenceville School District educators who registered to participate in the program.

  • We've hosted four FREE Pullover Prevention/Brake Light Repair clinics; helping 100+ people avoid unnecessary, costly, and potentially dangerous traffic stops. (Our 5th one is coming up in October!)
