FridayMusings endorsements
United States Congress

Haley Stevens deserves our support for re-election to the United States Congress. Haley Stevens is accessible and accountable. She is the ultimate, retail elected official who has made a point to share her opinions on the issues, to appreciate the services and programs available to residents throughout her district, and to work hard at understanding what makes our hometowns so special.

Haley Stevens understands the issues, standing strong for environmental protections, while understanding the need for availability of child care programs, and the importance of a strong historic public school education. For these reasons and more she does our vote for re-election.
State Representative

Two issues stand out in the race for State Representative. Education & Environment. One candidate stands out with solid, comprehensive positions that benefit Livonia representing Livonia values.

Laurie Pohutsky has already shown that as a scientist legislator she understands and will act on clean environment and clean water.

We have not had a legislator in years that understood and acted on the need for educational funding for our historic public schools. Laurie Pohutsky does and stands in stark contrast to her opponent Martha Ptashnik who wants to spin off money from our Livonia public schools to more of the Nancy DeVos favored for-profit charter schools. Anathema to Livonia values when our community was built on a strong historic public school system.

On substantive policies Laurie Pohutsky deserves our vote for re-election.
Livonia Board of Education

When FridayMusings endorsed Daniel Centers, Crystal Frank, Karen Handloser Bradford, and Tammy Bonifield for re-election to the Livonia Board of Education it was in part because of the team effort, the ability to work together in this trying time.

Perhaps other candidates will make a good addition but at this time continuity and stability is significant in determining our endorsement.

We need a transitional, stable approach in this trying time and find that in Centers, Frank, Bradford, Bonifield.

Schoolcraft College Board of Trustees

Schoolcraft College has long been a gem for all of western Wayne County. Based in Livonia this College has a statewide and national reputation in large part because of the quality of leadership. For the past 19 years it has been led by President Conway Jeffress. With his retirement it becomes necessary to maintain elected leadership that will work with the newly appointed President.

Brian Broderick, Terry Gilligan, and Joan Gebhardt deserve to be re-elected and FridayMusings suggests that when the ballots come out you vote all the way through the non-partisan ballot and make sure to add Brian Broderick, Terry Gilligan and Joan Gebhardt as three to vote for.
Michigan Supreme Court

Candidates for the Supremen Court appear on the nonpartisan ballot.

FridayMusings has endorsed Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack and Elizabeth Welch. They will fight corruption, ensure there is equal justice under the law and will serve fairly and impartially.
Charlie Mahoney Recognized as Volunteer of the Year by Michigan Works! Association
FridayMusings is excited to announced that Livonia's own Charlie Mahoney has been recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Michigan Works! Association.

Give it up for Charlie Mahoney, Livonia City Hall of Fame Class of 2011, just keeps on setting the template for community volunteerism.

The Michigan Works! Association recently honored Charlie Mahoney, owner of Four-M Associates Communications Group and chair of the Michigan Works! Association Board of Directors, for her dedication to the growth and promotion of Michigan Works!. Named the Michigan Works! Association 2020 Volunteer of the Year, Mahoney received the award during the association's annual conference.

"Charlie's passion and knowledge of the system has been extremely beneficial to SEMCA and the Michigan Works! system,” said Luann Dunsford, Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Works! Association. "Her commitment to bridge the gap between education and employers has been her priority well before it became a national goal.”
Mahoney has served on the SEMCA Workforce Development Board since 1997, serving as its Vice Chair until 2008 when she was elected Chair, a position she still holds today. She also served as SEMCA's first Educational Advisory Group (EAG) Board Chair until her appointment to Workforce Development Board Chair.

"Charlie's leadership and dedication has been of extraordinary benefit to SEMCA Michigan Works! over several decades," said Greg Pitoniak, chief executive officer of SEMCA Michigan Works!.
“She has been committed to connecting K-12 and our community colleges to align with developing the talent needs of businesses.

"Charlie has had a positive impact at the state and national levels with ensuring that the workforce development system is constantly improving in our service to employers and job seekers."

Because of her reputation among her peers, Mahoney was appointed to the Michigan Works! Association Board in 2007. She was elected Chairperson in 2010, a position she still holds today. In 2016 she was elected to the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) as a general board member and continues to serve in this capacity. Both positions require meeting with legislators, lobbyists, policymakers, and peers around the state and nation promoting, educating, and sometimes defending the workforce development system.

Mahoney said she is honored to receive this award.
"It is such an honor to receive this award from the Michigan Works! Association,” said Mahoney. "The true award, however, is being able to give my time and energy and be part of such a great team working on behalf of such an important cause. To give people their livelihoods is to give them back their value and self-worth. I am gratified to play a part in helping people change their lives for the better."

Established in 1987, the Michigan Works! Association fosters high-quality employment and employers and workers by providing support activities and a forum for information exchange for Michigan's talent development system.
