Livonia joining the fight to defeat pediatric cancer

This typewriter started following the St. Baldrick's Shave-a-thon when it was held at the Plymouth Rock and then when the Claddaugh in Livonia took over the annual event I was hooked. It was a fun couple of hours, with high energy, laughter and smiles, and good people.

Now the Shave-a-thon, under the leadership of Matt Kulacki, is hosted again at the One Under Craft Beer & Eats. The fun afternoon is this coming Sunday, September 25th, 12:00 - 5:00. The 2022 Shave-a-thon will reach the incredible goal of $1 million. That's right one million dollars raised right here in Western Wayne/Livonia.

For many of the years that St. Baldrick's has had the support of Livonia and our neighboring communities, the leadership was provided by Robb Drzewicki who will be on hand this Sunday to help continue the tradition of Livonia giving to fight pediatric cancer.

Now, this picture of Matt, pictured above, a successful real estate agent in his own right, is not meant to be his normal appearance, at least we do not think so, but rather it is a statement that he will be shaving that moptop off, joining dozens of others who have signed up seeking pledges to shave their heads. All for the fight to defeat pediatric cancer.

Lots of teams, and individuals, have signed up to raise money in this fight against pediatric cancer. One team is headed up by Doug McClain, pictured right, Livonia Jaycee, who says "What’s better than shaving your head to support childhood cancer research? Banding together as a team to raise even more!

"The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research. Let’s make sure kids know we have their back. Please give generously, to give kids with cancer the long, healthy lives they deserve."

Even if you are not having your head shaved, and may not have pledged your support for someone who is getting their head shaved, there is still plenty of fun for a good cause. A silent auction, drink specials, 50/50 drawings, and raffles. All for the fight to defeat pediatric cancer.

And I am sure there will be a big announcement when the $1,000,000 mark is reached or even exceeded.

Rotary AM and Rotary Noon invite you to World Polio Day Community

Spaghetti Dinner

October 26

Each October, all Rotary clubs around the world are challenged to donate their time, funds, and voices to help End Polio Now. To that end, the two Livonia Rotary Clubs will be holding their annual World Polio Day Community Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser this October 26th. The proceeds of which will help eradicate Polio in the small parts of the world where it is still being found.

The event will be held at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church on Farmington Road in Livonia. Ticket Sales, and Volunteer info will be posted here in Musings.

Downhome retail politics at its best

Vote. Run. Serve will be hosting their first in-person event - a Family-Friendly Candidate Meet & Greet co-hosted by the Livonia Democrats and the Livonia Republican Club. This bipartisan event is non-partisan and everyone, including kids with whom they will have activities, is welcome to meet the candidates for Congress and the State Legislature.

This event is also open to other candidates who would like to chat with residents but those 12 specific candidates will have an opportunity to speak to the audience at large.

Join them on Saturday, October 1st from 10 am to 12 pm at Mies Park for this retail politics event. Face-to-face and handshakes beats dark money mailings everyday.

KCAH Meal Packing Event October 15

Join your Community Service Clubs and The Legacy Consultants of Thrivent partnering with Kids Coalition Against Hunger, a non-profit humanitarian food aid organization, St. Edith’s Church, and other volunteers to pack 50,000+ meals.

Two-thirds of these meals will be delivered in and around Livonia via Livonia Cares and one-third donated to world hunger. Volunteer SignUp.

Rosedale Gardens offers a one on one care ministry

Stephen Ministry at Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church is a care ministry providing one on one care to hurting people. They currently have 10 Stephen Ministers serving members and non-members alike providing compassionate care to individuals who are struggling with life situations.

Stephen Ministers are the "after people." After death, divorce, loss of a job among other life events.

Stephen Ministry is a personal faith journey. It is a commitment. The privilege comes with 50 hours of training to equip you with valuable skills. The opportunity comes with a 2-year commitment, and continuing education along with peer supervision twice a month.

A Stephen Minister recently shared her feelings about what Stephen Ministry means to her:

“Stephen Ministry has given me a way to serve God by helping people who are hurting in some way. I’ve learned what to say, how to listen carefully, and how to give spiritual care and support. My faith has grown, and I’ve learned to pray aloud more comfortably. I feel Jesus working within me to touch the lives of people in need. I truly am blessed to be a Stephen Minister.

A care receiver recently wrote this of her experience with her Stephen Minister.

“On November 7, a Stephen Minister showed up at my door. I was still in my hole and wasn’t sure I would ever see daylight again. During our first meeting, I cried a lot and told her how I felt about God. At the end of our session, I was surprised she said she would be back next week. It took several sessions, but I know I could see daylight.

After 7 sessions I was now standing on the edge of my hole and looking up, believing God forgave me and I could forgive myself. I know now that if I start to look down I can call on my friend and she will be there for me. I will always be eternally grateful for Stephen Ministry.”
