Richard Leonardo Joyner VI
It was a birthday 70 years in the making.
I am ready for whatever path I take in the future because of the path I have taken in the past.

As we age, quality of life and opportunities become more prominent on the importance scale with some of us. While I am working to create a moderate mode of existence by many standards I become extremely appreciative to have been able to work out at the Livonia YMCA, to have close access to a Alexander Zonjic concert this past weekend, to plan to see the documentary movie on The Camino Voyage a week after my 70th Birthday, to have a multitude of activites right here instead of having to drive out of town, or if I do to be 3 miles to one downtown in Farmington and 6 miles to another in Northville, to have multiple eating options, and quality eating options within a mile or two from my house.

Life is about choices; you have to decide in your heart what is right and good for you personally. When I looked around my 70th Birthday Celebration and saw 100 friends who wanted to be there and made the choice to be there. And looked over to see my son Paul of Aurora, Colorado fame with his bride of two years Raquel, and their 7 months old son, my first grandchild Richard Leonardo and feel a sense of pride that nothing could come close to replacing. And then looked around to see brother Bob of San Antonio fame with his girl friend Alicia, I know that the Joyner tradition of success has come full circle, with success defined by an individual with happiness being the mainstay.

Albert Camus was the one who said "You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life." My 70 years of life has given me the opportunity many strive for and I have achieved. Parents who defined giving back to the community you call home. A son that carves out his own important role in life. A grandson that I will have the opportunity to watch grow in a loving home with caring parents.

It just does not get any better than the path my 70 years has taken.

Each year I am fortunate enough to add to the richness of my life as I count the friends of whose path I cross. To all who came to the Blue Plate on Sunday, wrote notes on Facebook, emailed or snail mailed me, I offer my thanks. From the Ayn Rand book, to the candy pumpkins, brother Bob, son Paul to the beautiful painting I say thanks. It does not get any better than the path my 70 years has taken.

Bob and Bill Joyner are pleased to announce two scholarships honoring
Richard and Geraldine Joyner are to be awarded
It was 60 years ago this month that dad Joyner took his two boys out to dinner in Decatur Georgia. We were lucky as it was the Howard Johnson just down the street from our home. Mom was in California visiting her family.

Both had a message. We were moving to Detroit Michigan, south of Canada in a house that had a clothes chute where we would put our dirty clothes where they would be washed for us. We would have our milk delivered and put into a milk chute where we could bring it in without ever leaving the house.

This was going to be a whole new experience. So 3 months later we packed up in our Plymouth and headed north. Bob,
Bill and Bilbo, our chihuahua. We spent New Years Eve in a motel, room 14. Shortly after the new year we moved into our new home at 32814 Indiana.

And the rest is history. A slight turn first. Seems Bob, leaving Grant Elementary school turned right out the door instead of left. Hours later, with the police looking,  and Bill not knowing what to do, the phone rang. It was Bob calling from Naimola's barber shop. A mile away. He remembered the phone number and asked the barber if he could use the phone to call home. This aptitude would stay with him as he majored in math at Michigan State University, went on to become a Doctor and then he must have turned the wrong way in life as he also went on to become a lawyer.

In 1962 mom Joyner became President of the Grant School PTA. In 1964 she became President of the Livonia PTA Council. In 1965 she was elected to her first of three terms on the Livonia Board of Education.

Dad Joyner in the meantime became equipment manager for the little baseball program, treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 785, Deacon at Rosedale Presbyterian Church and 20

year member of the Livonia Library Commission.

With that as a backdrop brother Bob and brother bill,
also known as the typewriter, discussed and decided that we would like to add to the opportunity for two Livonia students attending or planning to attend Schoolcraft College.

In January we will announce two winners of the Richard and Geraldine Joyner Scholarship. Each for $600.

But it is not just the two Joyner brothers, Bob's sons Jonathan and Jason and daughter Kimberly along with Bill's son Paul are all contributing to their grandparents scholarship.

Applications will be available starting October 1st, due on December 1st, awarded on January 1st. The application will be available in several locations but certainly you will find a link to the application in FridayMusings. So stay tuned for the application next week.

Here's to you mom and dad. Your decision to move to Livonia with quality schools, a plan that developed for open air parks and planned community development. Thanks to your decision to become involved in your hometown. You would continue to be proud of Bill and Bob, Jason, Jonathan, Paul and Kimberly just as we are proud of you.

On Friday Musings will return to covering our Livonia political scene. We just needed a couple of days to get past the hangover that was known as Happy 70. Time to move on. But just wanted to savor the last day of joy. Thanks for tolerating and accepting my happiness that needed to be shared.

The Epic Movie Camino Voyage coming to Livonia's Art in the Park -- Phoenix Theatres -- October 1st
The Camino Voyage | Trailer
The Camino Voyage | Trailer

We are thrilled to share the news that  THE CAMINO VOYAGE  is coming to The Phoenix Theatre.  They are playing "The Camino Voyage" which will be shown exclusively at Laurel Park on October 1 at 7:00pm.

The movie shares the story of a crew including a writer, two musicians, an artist and a stonemason who embark
on an inspiring and dangerous 2,500 kilometre modern-day Celtic odyssey from Ireland to Spain.  Inspired by the great sea voyages of early Irish history and mythology, the crew sets out on an audacious journey of their own in a traditional Irish boat they built themselves.

The Camino voyagers are no longer at an young age but they bring courage, determination and love of life proving that it is never too late to embark on an adventure.

Check out the music of Glen Hansard and picture this balladeer on the 2,500 kilometre odyssey. After you check out his music and the trailer of the movie make plans to join the typewriter at the exclusive showing only at the Phoenix Theatre October 1st.

Blessings in a Backpack-Livonia  Bowling for the Future of America
Because Hunger . . . Doesn't Take a Break on Weekends

You are invited to support and attend the 6th Annual Bowling for Backpacks Fundraiser on Saturday November 23, from 2-4 pm at Merri-Bowl Lanes in Livonia.  The funds we raise will allow us to continue to send food-filled weekend backpacks home with at-risk children.

They are now serving over 500 students at Eleven of the Livonia Public Schools. They assist children attending Webster, Kennedy, Cleveland, Cooper, Hayes, Grant, Garfield, Grant, Johnson, Rosedale, and Roosevelt Schools. This year, they will add additional students, and hope to expand to additional schools.

Your sponsorship, donation and/or participation in this event will help ensure that they can meet this goal.

This exciting event, which will include 2 hours of bowling, pizza and beverages, Silent Auction, various items for raffle and a 50/50 raffle, will be held from 2-4 pm, with registration beginning at 1 pm. Tickets for bowling are $20, while the cost for non-bowlers is $10.   There are also many opportunities for sponsorships, as well as a need for donations to the Silent Auction and raffle.

You can visit their webpage at  https://www.biablivonia.org/  to learn more about sponsorship and donation opportunities.

All funds raised in Livonia stay here the community to support  Blessings in a Backpack. On behalf of the children who will benefit by your contribution, they thank you in advance for your support and look forward to partnering with you in this very worthwhile event.

Their Mission
"Blessings in a Backpack-Livonia" is part of the national Blessings in a Backpack program that addresses the problem of childhood hunger.  Each week backpacks are packed by volunteers and distributed to the participating Livonia Public School children who are considered "food insecure".  Although these "at-risk" students are eligible for free or reduced-fee lunches during the school week, many of the children do not receive sufficient meals or nutrition on the weekends.

The unfortunate result is that large numbers of these students return to school on Mondays tired and hungry.
It is very difficult to concentrate or care about your studies when you are worried about where your next meal is coming from.
