Save the SS United States, before it’s too late

How one Livonia business is helping lead the fight to save what many consider an irreplaceable national treasure.

12 years ago Chuck Dardas, AlphaUSA, got a call from a friend asking if he would call Lee Iacocca to enlist his support to save the SS United States. "You are in the auto industry so you must know Iacocca," the friend said.

Dardas had not met Iacocca, but he had enough sense to take it up a notch. He walked over to Dave Lawrence's office, a seasoned pro in manufacturing with more than two decades of leading businesses, who was the senior VP and CAO of AlphaUSA, a company that cared about its community and its workforce in southeast Michigan.

Now, a decade later, Lawrence is on the Board of a growing campaign to Save the SS United States. A campaign that has become a source of inspiration nationwide that brings people together to celebrate its amazing history.

The World embraced the SS United States

The SS United States was a symbol of pride and prestige for the American people, who loved to travel on the fastest ship in the world. In its prime, the ship attracted celebrities and dignitaries from all over the globe, who enjoyed its luxury and comfort. Some of the famous names that sailed on the SS United States were Bob Hope, Princess Grace of Monaco, Salvadore Dali, Rita Hayworth, Harry Truman, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Duke Ellington. They were part of the ship's history and glamour.

Some continue to have hope that this ship will be saved

The ship is drydocked and long past its prime but the SS United States Conservancy is working hard to preserve and restore the historic ship that once sailed across the Atlantic. The ship was in danger of being scrapped, but thanks to a generous donation from H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest, the Conservancy was able to buy the ship and keep it afloat for 20 months. However, the ship still needs a lot of work and money to become a vibrant waterfront destination, where people can learn about its history and enjoy its amenities. The Conservancy hopes that more people will join the "Save Our Ship" Campaign and help make this dream a reality.

Susan Gibbs, President of the Conservancy, explains the dream

Musings is sharing here a condensed version of an opinion piece written by Susan L. Gibbs the SS United States Conservancy’s president and a founding board member. She is the granddaughter of William Francis Gibbs, the SS United States designer, who directed plans for more than 60% of the nation’s wartime fleet during World War II and designed over 6,000 ships during the course of his career.

"There is a transformative design and financial plan that reimagines the ship as an exciting multiuse complex and world-class destination which would repurpose the ocean liner with a 1,000-key hotel, numerous food and beverage destinations, multiple event venues, acres of public green space, galleries, and a world-class museum."

What makes this ship so unique that a Livonia-based manufacturing company would be involved in attempting to save it from being turned into scrap?

"The epitome of “Made in America,” the SS United States smashed the transatlantic speed record on its maiden voyage in 1952 using only two-thirds of its power. It made its maiden eastbound crossing, a distance of 2,942 miles, in three days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes. It beat the previous record held by the Queen Mary over approximately the same course by 10 hours and 2 minutes.

"On its maiden westbound crossing, it again bested the Queen Mary, thus making it the first American ship in 100 years to capture the coveted Blue Riband, awarded to the fastest transatlantic ocean liner. Amazingly, it still holds the record today. The SS United States has crossed the ocean with four U.S. presidents and countless world leaders, famous figures, servicemen and women, tourists, and immigrants.

"The SS United States was the lifelong dream of William Francis Gibbs, who aimed to build the world’s fastest and safest ocean liner. He succeeded with support from the U.S. Navy and a public-private partnership with the U.S. government that ensured the engineering marvel could also serve as a top-secret troopship.

"The late broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite, a former passenger himself, was right when he believed that the ship’s rehabilitation would restore American pride and that neglecting the ship would be a 'crime against history'.”

He has flown so many times in his five years, Michigan, California, Brazil, and Hawaii, that he has his site set on piloting his own plane one day.

From 1932 through to 2024 women have played a significant role in helping build Livonia artistically, culturally, and philantrophically. They are networking for the good of the community and the individual.

Today there are many clubs and organizations in Livonia.

The oldest non-religious group known to continually meet in Livonia was organized in January 1932. This study group was formed by fourteen young women living in Rosedale Gardens Subdivision. Livonia did not have public transportation or libraries and most families had only one car.

They chose the name "Arts and Letters" meeting on Tuesday evenings twice a month at the homes of members. The purpose was literary and cultural discussing books and attending theatrical events.

The philanthropic group, Livonia City Woman's Club was organized in 1941. It was followed two years later when 24 women organized Moms of America-Mothers of Men in Service.

In 2023 the Livonia Women's Connection was started believing that "W(OM)E(N) can accomplish more when we work together."

90 years since the first club started by and for women the tradition of community involvement continues in a number of ways including the Livonia Women's Connection.

The first Livonia Women's Connection of 2024 is set for February 8th where you can join Councilwomen Laura Toy and Carrie Budzinski at the Family Affair Party Rentals for a Gal-entine's Day social mixer from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and enjoy some sweet treats from local bakeries.

This is a great opportunity to connect with local leaders in all areas and aspects of Livonia life. It's also a chance to learn more about local Livonia businesses. Nicole McPherson is opening up her beautiful party rental space, Family Affair, and the following bakeries are offering sweet treats for the evening:

As Livonia moves closer to our 75th Anniversary since becoming a city lets consider a leader you consider our GOAT

The area that is now Livonia was originally inhabited by Potawatomi Indians. Rich soil and abundant harvests had first attracted pioneers from New England and New York to this area. They brought with them a new way of life and perhaps the very name "Livonia" - the name of a town in New York State, Pennsylvania State, and a region of the Baltic Sea comprising present-day Estonia and Latvia.

By March 17, 1835, when an act of territorial legislature set the boundaries of Livonia Township, a forested wilderness had become an area of prosperous dairy farms and fruit orchards.

For the first 100 years, Livonians raised sheep and dairy cattle and grew vegetables and grain. Growth was slow.

In the late 1940s, the area took its first dramatic step from agriculture to commerce and industry. In 1948, the General Motors Corporation built an automatic transmission plant, soon to be followed by a Ford Motor Company parts depot.

In 1949, the Michigan Racing Association built a thoroughbred and harness race track at a cost of 5 million dollars. In order for the entire area of the Township of Livonia to benefit from racetrack revenues, it became necessary to incorporate.

In 1950, the residents of Livonia Township voted to become a City. On May 23, 1950, the entire Township was incorporated into the City of Livonia. Livonia grew from a population of 17,000 in 1950 to over 100,000 in 1998.

Today Livonia has a population of approximately 94,000.

As Livonia approaches the 75th Anniversary of the founding as a City let's get your opinion on who you think is the Greatest Mayor of All Time. We will include everyone from Jesse Ziegler in 1950 to Dennis Wright in 2019.

Musings will post your opinion, the results of this poll on Friday, February 9.

It will be interesting to see results when every Mayor since 1950 is listed:

In your opinion who is the Greatest Livonia Mayor of All Time?
Jesse Ziegler 1950-1954
Elbert Hartom 1955-56
Bill Brashear 1956-61
Harvey Moelke 1962-70
Ed McNamara 1970-86
Bob McCann 1986-87
Robert Bennett 1988-95
Jack Kirksey 1996-03, 2008-15
Jack Engebretson 2004-07
Dennis Wright 2016-19

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
