For 60 of 75 years the Joyner family has called Livonia home

Transformational leadership continues with the August/November City Council Election

Five Livonia residents, Brian Meager (top left), Steve Alexander (top center), Kayleigh Kavanagh Reid (pictured left), Marlene Katafias (top right), and Nicolas John Pickard (below left) have picked up informational packets from the Clerk's office indicating an interest in running for Council.

Of the five who have picked up packets only one, as of Musings going to bed with the Friday edition, has filed, Kayleigh Kavanagh Reid. The deadline for filing is April 22, 4:00.

Pictures were not sent to Musings, they were posted on their social media sites. As the campaign moves forward candidates will be asked to provide photographs and biographical information.

The Livonia charter is such that if more than 8 file there will be a primary election in August. The top 8 finishers in the primary will advance to the November General election.

Only the City Council election will be on the ballot in November with the exception of those living in the Clarenceville Public School District which will also have a bond issue on the November ballot, details coming in Musings next week.

The City of Livonia will have a millage proposal on the ballot in August for the next phase of the city center project. It is expected that even with the millage for the city center Livonia will still have the lowest tax rate in Wayne County. More on that to come in Musings shortly.

Only 16 days left, January 26 at 11:00, until our hometown's 4th Annual Hockey for a Cause fundraiser! With tickets going fast you don't want to miss your chance to be a part of this amazing event! You can grab yours before they're gone.

The committee will also auction off a one-of-a-kind hand-painted helmet, shown in the pictures above, courtesy of Taylor'd Rod and Custom, signed by our 2024 Detroit Red Wings Alumni, including the legendary Mickey Redmond and more!

In the fourth year, some things will be the same; members of the Rotary Clubs will be joining Breaking Barriers Kids and Families to assist with check-in, the Livonia Civic Chorus will sing the National Anthem, the typewriter will handle the announcing, this year with assistance from Haitham Fakhouri, Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan will join Chuck Dardas and Brandon McCullough and one of the Red Wing legends for the honorary puck drop.

Get your tickets today right here, and help support a great cause! 100% of all the proceeds benefit Breaking Barriers Kids and Families. $40,000 has been raised in the first 3 years.

Traditions like this game start with one dollar, one idea and one person. Livonia Historical Society continues to enhance Livonia 75 Programming

The 2025 Michigan History Alliance® Grant Program Awards $2,500 in

Funding to Livonia Historical Society for Greenmead Project

Jim McConnell, President of the Livonia Historical Society pictured here, joins with The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) to announce that the LHS is a recipient of the Michigan History Alliance® Grant Program. The Michigan Society awarded grants to 23 of its member organizations.

The Livonia Historical Society requested funding to revitalize its exhibit “The Livonia Township Experience.” The exhibit, created about 20 years ago, is located in the Farmhand’s House of the historical society’s Joshua Simmons Farm. The Livonia Historical Society will use a $2,500 Alliance grant, as well as some matching funds, to purchase exhibit cases and print new display panels for the exhibit, which it plans to open in time for the celebration of Livonia’s 75th anniversary later in 2025.

The Michigan Society invited its member organizations to submit proposals for a maximum grant amount of $2,500. For this year’s grant cycle, the Historical Society of Michigan received 79 applications requesting nearly $160,000—demonstrating the need for a grant program for this sector of Michigan’s cultural community.

“Preserving and interpreting history begins at the local level,” said Executive Director and CEO Larry Wagenaar. “Michigan’s smaller local history organizations do great work, and we want to provide funding where it is most beneficial. While these grants are relatively modest, they have a significant impact on our member organizations.”

Learning about the Livonia Township Experience and the Joshua Simmons Farm

In 1824 Joshua Simmons of Bristol, New York, obtained a patent from the federal government for 160 acres of land in Livonia Township. Simmons and his wife, Hannah, were among the township's earliest white settlers. Their first home was a log shanty, built in 1826. In 1841 they constructed this house in the Greek Revival style, popular in New York State.

The farm was named Meadow Brook. Joshua Simmons (1801-1882) hewed lumber to build the earliest barns and mills in Livonia, Farmington and Plymouth. He continued to acquire acreage, becoming one of Livonia's most prominent landholders. In 1920 Sherwin and Jean Boyd Hill purchased the farm and renamed it Greenmead. The city of Livonia acquired the property in 1976 as a park. The Joshua Simmons Farm is listed in the National Register of Historic Places."

Building our Veterans Connection will strengthen the next 25 years in Livonia

Get ready to mark your calendars because the Livonia Veterans Connection is hosting their monthly meeting, and they can’t wait to see you all there!

On Tuesday, January 14th at 6:30 PM, they will be gathering at Benny's Pizza Pub, a local favorite known for its mouthwatering pizza and friendly vibe. What better place to catch up with friends?

Benny's, right at the corner of Joy and Merriman, thanks to David Laycock, there is a big table reserved just for the Livonia Veterans Connection. That means they will have plenty of space to relax and enjoy each other's company.

This is such a great chance to connect with fellow veterans, share some laughs, and maybe swap a few stories. Whether you're new to the group or a veteran (pun intended!), come join them for a fun evening!

They are looking forward to sharing good food, great conversations, and lots of laughter. Bring a friend! Hope to see you there!

Transformational Innovation is providing education support

For years the LPS Education Foundation held a luncheon to raise awareness and raise funding for the Foundation.

But this is the year for creative innovation for all of Livonia, from the recently dedicated historical marker for Bentley High School to the construction of a new wellness center, and plans for a new Five Mile, Farmington civic center campus.

And now the LPS Foundation is working to set up a new tradition to kick off the New Year, a new fundraising program on January 30th, 5:30-7:30.

The goal of the LPS Education Foundation is to provide additional financial support to the school district for innovative programs and services, so the school system can continue to be a “beacon of excellence” to all it serves.

To attend the Dollars for Scholars, benefiting the competitive edge savings program, all you need to do is use your phone and the QR code or link here.

The mission of the LPS Education Foundation is to enlarge the resources available to the school district which will foster and expand educational opportunities for programs impacting students by building effective partnerships.

2025 3rd Annual Livonia

Martin Luther King Day Legacy Breakfast

Sponsor: Livonia Equity & Anti-Racism Network

You are invited for breakfast Monday, January 20th, 8:00 AM, at the beautiful Madonna University Welcome Center for the 3rd annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reserve your $30 tickets here.

Thanks to enthusiastic support from Madonna University the 2024 breakfast at their beautiful Welcome Center, their ADA-compliant facilities, and modern technology made the event more accessible to more people. It also provided a separate space for the Waldorf teacher-led children's program and an opportunity to showcase artwork submitted by Livonia area youth for a "Living the Dream" Youth Art Competition.

As the program builds on the success of the first two years, they will continue to celebrate Dr. King's legacy of inspiration by paying homage to the women who lit the fires of the Civil Rights movement and those who continue to keep those fires burning today.

They also look forward to establishing a scholarship fund for Livonia students, as well as, celebrating individuals in our community who help to keep Dr. King's dream alive and inspire others to do the same.
