9 days until the puck is dropped by Chuck Dardas, Dan MacIver and Veronica Cruz for Year Three of the partnership that brings families together, raises funding for LK&F, provides service opportunities for our Rotary AM and Noon Clubs, sets up ice time for our hometown youth hockey programs to skate on the same ice before the game and at intermission with members of the Red Wings Alumni, gives 20 hometown favorites a chance to skate with some of the best names ever to wear a professional hockey jersey.

It was three years ago that Brandon McCullough said let's turn Livonia into Hockeytown and invite our neighbors to come out and watch the Red Wings Alumni skate at Eddie Edgar Arena against a team of Livonia All-stars.

Rob Turfe at a Private Showing at the Phoenix Theatre.

Rob Turfe is preparing to fly in from California for the private showing premier of his short film “I Love This Country”. The Phoenix Theatre is also preparing to welcome the community to our own Livonia Art in the Park.

The event will focus on Livonia as the place for culture and serious discussions on democracy with panelists including retired Admiral Ken Barrett, veteran and DEI leader Lorrena Black, and Teri Weingarden, West Bloomfield Township Treasurer, a leading voice for Judaism in Michigan.

The private showing is set for 7:00 pm on January 25. If you would like to be a part of the evening with a limited private audience, send a note to rwilliamjoyner@gmail.com.

The film “I Love This Country” reflects on democracy and fallen soldiers who have sacrificed their lives. The film’s message is that love, diversity, and solidarity are foundational to truly embracing duty, honor, and country.

Members of American Legion Post 32 who provided the Honor Guard in the film, Executive Producer Peter Raft, Mike Makki of Veterans Affairs, John Santeiu Funeral Home, County Commissioner Al Haidous, Rob’s Uncle, Turfe’s brother Norm who also was a West Point Graduate, and Judge David Turfe, Dearborn Heights will also attend the event.

Madonna University partners with Human Relations Commission to honor MLK Legacy

Madonna University held a MLK event Wednesday that they say was inspiring to all. Students, faculty, staff, and other members of our community honored Dr. King's vision for justice and equality through performances and heartfelt conversations.

Performances included Kevin Liang playing Amazing Grace on the violin, and Brothers of Faith performing their song When Saints Cry.

They also want to congratulate their essay contest winner, Nekold Jones, and the Livonia Human Relations Commission for sponsoring the contest.

Detroit News opinion piece

Last week the Detroit News published an opinion piece accusing Democratic elected officials of passing legislation to provide free breakfast and lunch to school children to "buy votes."

State Representative responds to the opinion piece:

"Children learn better when they're not hungry, and for some, what they eat at school are the only meals they get. I'm proud of our work to provide these meals to kids and it's my sincere hope we can continue the program past this year.

"Doing things that constituents support isn't "buying votes." It's doing our jobs, and I'm grateful for the opportunity HD 17 has given me to serve them".
