20 years publishing FridayMusings without bias but not without opinion

With the Presidential Primary less than 9 weeks away, it is an appropriate time to review what elections will be on the ballot that directly affect Livonia.

Throughout the year we will post announcements of candidates as they file for election. In the meantime, these are the elections we will be facing in 2024.

2024 statewide election dates in Michigan

Tuesday, Feb. 27: Michigan presidential primary

Tuesday, Aug. 6: Michigan primary election

Tuesday, Nov. 5: Michigan general election

Presidential Primary February 27

In November Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson released the 2024 presidential primary candidate list as required by Michigan law.. Under state law, the Secretary of State is required to issue a list of individuals “generally advocated by the national news media to be potential presidential candidates” for the Republican and Democratic parties for the presidential primary election.

The Secretary of State has identified the following candidates (listed alphabetically) as potential presidential candidates in 2024:

Democratic Party: Joe Biden, Dean Phillips, Marianne Williamson

Republican Party: Doug Burgum, Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Asa Hutchinson,

Vivek Ramaswamy, Donald Trump

The Michigan presidential primary will be Feb. 27. Along with the candidates listed on the ballot, voters also may choose “uncommitted” as an option. The deadline for primary election ballots are to be sent to military and overseas voters is Jan. 13, absent voter ballots must be printed by Jan. 18.

Livonia Board of Education- November 5 General

In 2024, Livonia Public Schools will hold elections for the Board of Education. There will be four positions open in this election, with four incumbents potentially running: Karen Bradford, Tammy Bonifield, Madeline Acosta, and Crystal Frank. Frank will be running to complete the term remaining with the resignation of Dan Centers.

There are at least two candidates who have expressed to Musings an interest in running for the Livonia Board of Education in 2024: Emily Keith and Drew Buatti. Other potential candidates may be considering a run, but have not yet publicly expressed their interest.

Clarenceville Board of Education, November 5 General

In 2024, Clarenceville Public Schools will hold elections for the Board of Education. There will be four positions open in this election, with four incumbents potentially running: Pamela Shourd, Jeffrey Bunker, Patrick Marietti, and Andrea Watt.

16th District Court August 6 Primary, November 5 General

Judge Kathleen McCann is not eligible to seek another term so her position on the 16th District Court, covering all of Livonia will create a vacancy with one opening in our District Court. Two candidates have expressed an interest in seeking this position, Jim Jolly and Robin Persiconi. Considering that an opening on the District Court does not come along very often one can reasonably expect others to consider running for this vacancy.

Michigan State Representative August 6 Primary, November 5 General

Livonia, having three State Representatives, will see all three incumbent legislators on the Ballot in 2024: Representative Matt Koleszar, Representative Laurie Pohutsky, and Representative Stephanie Young.

District 16 includes southeastern Livonia along with parts of Redford Township and Detroit. State Rep. Stephanie Young (D) is the incumbent and is expected to seek re-election. No candidates have yet expressed an interest in opposing Young.

District 17, encompasses northern Livonia as well as parts of Redford Township and Detroit. Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D) is the incumbent and is expected to seek re-election. No candidates have yet expressed an interest in opposing Pohutsky.

District 22, encompasses western Livonia along with portions of Plymouth and Northville. Rep. Matthew Koleszar (D) is the incumbent and is expected to seek re-election. Two Republican candidates have filed to oppose Koleszar, Adam Stathakis and Christian Garrett Charette.

United States Senate August 6 Primary, November 5 General

With Senator Debbie Stabenow retiring Michigan will have a contested race in the primary by both political parties as several candidates have already expressed an interest in running for the nomination:

Republican: Nikki Snyder, Peter Meijer, Sandy Pensler, Mike Rogers, James Crag, Michael Hoover, Sherry O'Donnell, Alexandria Taylor and J.D. Wilson

Democrat: Elissa Slotkin, Hill Harper, Nasser Beydoun, Zack Burns, Leslie Love

United States Member of Congress August 6 Primary, November 5 General

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D) has announced that she will be running for re-election in 2024. No candidate has yet announced plans to run against Tlaib in either the Democratic or Republican primary.

Three upcoming candidate events reaching out to Livonia voters

FridayMusings will share activities sponsored by candidates, regardless of party affiliation, once

they are submitted for publication. The events are included without endorsement, but rather as

an opportunity for Livonia residents to get a sense of some of the campaign activities and in some cases Legislative activities taking place that have an impact on our hometown.

Kickoff to 2024!

Help Laurie Pohutsky kick off 2024 with a bang! Join them for an evening out at Livonia's Wintergarden Tavern on January 26th from 6 to 8 PM.

Art is the creation, expression, or appreciation of beauty or meaning, based on aesthetic principles. Hockey is both a sport and an art form, as it certainly meets these criteria.

The typewriter can't sing, but loves a musical stage play and sometimes closes my eyes as I picture the movement across the stage in a stirring dance sequence, putting myself in the middle of the dance.

The typewriter can't draw but loves the artist emphasizing an immediate impression of a moment using modern life as a subject matter in a way that had not been tried before.

The typewriter can't skate so as the announcer for Year Three of the Detroit Red Wings V Livonia All Stars captained by Council President Brandon McCullough, I will be front and center.

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
