As we gather to dedicate this Historical Marker recognizing this area which served as Bentley H.S. for nearly 40 years, we stand on ground, which is dare I say sacred to the thousands of former students, teachers, administrators, custodians, cooks, parents, coaches, and volunteers.
We also recognize this land was and remains sacred to Indigenous peoples who cared for this land for thousands of years before the ground was repurposed for education in 1944.
I want to thank the class of 1973 graduate Bud Riddle, a member of the White Lake Ojibwe tribe for his teaching and for keeping the fire burning.
We pause for a few moments to remember those Bentley H.S. students and employees who have passed away, many far too soon. We also remember those classmates who served our country in the military and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
African holy man Augustine of Hippo spoke of our hearts being restless til they rest with God. I later came to better understand these words from a person incarcerated at Jackson Prison who said there is a hole in our hearts only God can fill.
Today, we fill our hearts with memories and gratitude. We turn toward that which fills our hearts, be it God, Love, the Creator, a Higher Power, our Philosophy, our skepticism, or other words appropriate for you.
May our time here today leave our hearts overflowing and may we share that goodness with those whose hearts need filling up.
