Helping define Livonia's

Quality of Life

Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan congratulates the 8th President of Madonna University at his Installation this past weekend

"Congratulations Dr. Christopher Dougherty on your installation as the eighth President of Madonna University. Many of us have already seen the experience and passion Dr. Daugherty brings to his new role. We've already seen enrollments rise with more students choosing Madonna University in the Fall of 2024 than the previous year. In an age of declining college enrollment, this is a testament to both the tradition of excellence at Madonna as well as its visionary leadership.

"Today's event brought together many from the community. Two of my favorites, former Schoolcraft College President Dick McDowell and Livonia Youth Commissioner Hunter Anderson were on hand to offer their good wishes. I am excited to work with Dr. Daugherty and Madonna University in making Livonia a city our kids want to come home to. Congratulations to you both."

Musings is delighted to convey the reflections on the effort of preparing 50,000 meals by more than 130 volunteers to nourish the needy last weekend, as recounted by Livonia AM Club President Dave Stechholz and Livonia Lion Matt Collins:

The Livonia Lions showed up ready to work Saturday, October 12th, when 136 Livonia Community volunteers gathered in St. Edith's Church Hall to pack more than 50,000 Kids Coalition Against Hunger Meals.

The 7:30 am set up was well attended and included a Livonia girls' hockey team that assembled more than 200 boxes and labeled more than 8,000 meal pack bags. By 9:00 am the volunteers were pouring in and the Meal Packing Event was underway.

By 11:30 am volunteers were finished packing 51,000 meals and helped clean up and repack the entire production area.

Morning refreshments included Looney Baker Donuts, Biggby Coffee, bottled water, and soda. Taormina's Pizza arrived just in time for the volunteers to enjoy a couple of delicious slices before they headed home.

Participating Members of the Livonia Lions Club included Lions President Dave and Carol Zarek, Vern and Sarah Webb, Matt Collins, Julie Kain, Victoria Haltom, and Darlene Markewicz. Associate LIon Daniel Rathbun made an unscheduled pick up of 20 cases of meals for delivery to a Harper Woods food pantry.

Special Thanks to the Livonia AM and Noon Rotary Clubs for their leadership and support of this year's KCAH Meal Packing Event.

Meals Packed to date have now exceeded 500,000 meals!

Well done Livonia! Your support of those who suffer from food insufficiency is OUTSTANDING!

Livonia Rotary AM President Dave Stechholz

What a great morning of community, national, and world service at St. Edith’s in Livonia. Many businesses and even more service organizations, including our own Livonia A.M. Rotary Club, our sister Livonia Noon Rotary Club, the Churchill Interact Club, the Livonia Lions, and the Stevenson Girls Hockey Team, gave joyful service in packing 50,000 meals to feed the hungry, including those in need in the South from the hurricanes.

All I can say is a big BRAVO!!

We had 13 of our A.M. Rotarians plus 6 family members, 8 or 9 Churchill HS Interactors, and there were 6 Noon Livonia Rotarians.

Of the 130+ volunteers, Rotary was remarkably well-represented. And we had such good help from set up to take down.

A strong note of great thanks to Tammy Bonifield, and our Rotary committee in taking on this enormous project. Thanks also to those who solicited donors, brought or arranged for coffee, beverages, donuts, and pizza, donor companies, and all who contributed in any way.

A special thanks also to our dear friends, Lion Matt Collins and KCAH Exec. Director Mike Burwell. Your continued and amazing commitment to KCAH, community service, and human needs is truly praiseworthy, even as we serve with gladness.

Livonia Equity & Anti-Racism Network

The chilly, wet weather didn't stop the Livonia Pull Over Prevention Project: Free Brake Light Repair last weekend at Seven and Middlebelt.

They fixed car lights for free and did light repairs where needed.

As member Bud Riddle says it was "Another successful day. I love volunteering for this activity."

Another volunteer Judy Puhl describes the day this way, "Spent a long day outdoors in service of our community with some of the most amazing folks! Livonia Equity & Anti-Racism Network has been hosting brake light repair events since the fall of 2020. Even with the rainy weather, we were able to help about two dozen motorists, reducing equipment-based traffic stops. This picture exemplifies what community is all about. One volunteer sheltering another during a downpour, so the work could continue."

2024 Governor’s Award of Excellence

Trinity Health Livonia announced that it has received the 2024 Governor's Award of Excellence. This prestigious recognition, given in collaboration with Governor Gretchen Whitmer, iMPROve Health, and the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) Keystone Center, highlights exceptional healthcare organizations in Michigan.

The Governor’s Award of Excellence began in 2003 in partnership with iMPROve Health and Gov. John Engler. The award recognizes providers that focus on improving Michigan’s most pressing health issues.

"In an industry like health care where quality is so important, the Governor’s Award of Excellence stands as a testament to our hospital’s unwavering commitment to delivering the highest standard of care,” said Matthew Griffin, MD, chief medical officer and president of Trinity Health Livonia. “I am so proud of the work our teams in our hospital are doing to transform lives and to create a healthier future for local residents."

Trinity Health Livonia has received several other awards and recognitions recently, including the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award. This award is given to hospitals for their commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. Additionally, the AHA awarded Trinity Health Livonia the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award.

The award criteria were aligned with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' healthcare objectives. Enrolled organizations were eligible to receive the Governor’s Award in up to three different categories, as well as the Medals of Achievement, by demonstrating the incorporation of Person and Family and/or Health Equity strategies to drive improvement.

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
