BIOBRAND PULSE

Community Feedback/Polls

It's 2025.... Do You Know What Your

ο»ΏE-mail Marketing ROI is?

We did a poll in our BioBrand Labs October Notebook in which we asked you about your E-mail marketing return on investment/ROI. The poll did not get many responses, unfortunately. Rather than feeling like a failure 😩 we have surmised that many life science marketers simply are not measuring it and do not know their e-mail marketing ROI. Does that ring true to you?

This poll was meant to compare life science marketing ROI to that which was reported in the Litmus 2025 State of Marketing survey, because...

We were stunned by the fact that 35% of marketers across different sectors in the Litmus email marking survey reported a 36:1 ROI for e-mail marketing, that's $36 for every $1 spent!

We want to help you leverage and maximize this fantastic marketing channel. Of course, a great way you can achieve this is by taking Email Marketing 101 β€” Strategy and Tactics for Life-Science Marketers. Remember to use code EMAILVIP50 before December 5th for 50% Black Friday savings.

Also, per this newsletter's theme, we'll be running ROI-maximizing experiments on our own e-mail blasts as well as our clients who choose to participate. We'll be offering deep discounts on e-blast customers who would like to maximize ROI and allow us to publish the results, contact us if you're interested in joining the BioBrand Labs E-mail Marketing project.

Meet Genie, our helper in the E-mail Marketing 101 Course. She'll provide tips to help you maximize your ROI.

LinkedIn Ads: A Secret to Our Success

Biotech Networks hosted our first event in the Denver/Boulder area on November 11th. While the hub is emerging, it's admittedly smaller than our other hubs and our brand is not as well known there. We were able to get a nice attendance (~40 people) due to several factors. One of the keys to this success was leveraging LinkedIn Ads, which we run for almost every event. According to a survey we ran in late 2024, 42% of life science marketers use LinkedIn Ads. While this may seem like a high number, we would urge even more of you to use LinkedIn Ads as we find them to be very effective. Check out the data from our Colorado event campaign below.

Biotech Networks leveraged LinkedIn ads to host a successful event in a new location, Colorado.

What do you think of our results? We don't normally have the time to compare CPC and CPM between platforms or to track true conversions and ROI. We just know that LinkedIn ads work for helping us run successful events (~$300 budget for a $4-8K expense) and also in building brand awareness in all our 12 US hubs. Note that the number of followers and searches increased many-fold for the LinkedIn company page. We often find that when we "pay to play" by purchasing ads, we are significantly rewarded by the social media or web algorithm and/or application.

Here are the reasons we're...um... "loony" for LinkedIn Ads and think you should be using them:

  • Detailed audience targeting: you can target your audience by their location, job title, industry, age, company, many other factors. This feature allows you to reach your target audience precisely and quickly, and it you from spending your budget advertising to the wrong audience.
  • Cost effectiveness: LinkedIn's minimum daily budget is $10, and you can run your ads for any amount of time and budget. You can also review results quickly and change tactics if your ad isn't performing.
  • Detailed statistics: We've provided some of the ad statistics above, and there are even more that they offer, including your ad performance by demographic. You can quickly change course as needed. If your team has the time, you can likely get a true ROI for your campaigns.
  • Long-term brand benefits: As mentioned, our page gained 2-fold more followers compared to the earlier period and search volume also increased by 8-fold. These gains in brand visibility help us to build our online presence in a region, resulting in more subscribers and better event attendance. We have seen this positive effect over the past few years hosting events on the US East Coast.
  • Gain competitive information: This feature is a bit of a surprise to us, you can actually view all of the LinkedIn ads of your competitors! Visit the company page and if the company is running ads you'll see a "View ad library" link in the left sidebar (click on the link to see the LinkedIn ads for a well known life science company). Of course, you can't see the statistics for the ads, but you can see what products they're advertising, how they're promoting them and possibly what regions they're targeting based on the languages used.

We love LinkedIn ads so much, you'd think that we'd be getting a kickback for this post, but we didn't! We do however offer social media posts in our media kit, they're a very affordable way to reach our 12 US hubs. We can run these organically or promote them using methods similar to these, the benefit is a time/resource savings for you.

FIELD NOTES

Insightful life science marketing

Whither Twitter? Where Have Life Scientists & Marketers Gone Since the Shakeup of the Platform?

In our late 2024 survey of life scientists and marketers, it was unclear what social media platform would replace Twittter/X, if any. The real winner since then? A diaspora of social media applications such as Instagram, Tiktok, Threads, Bluesky and others in which you can find scientists thriving and see some life science company presence. Check out last month's Notebook, Field Notes section to see an Instagram/Tiktok influencer who has done brand placements for a major life science company.

What's a life science marketer to do, with the fragmentation of the life science social media space? The majority of life science companies seem to be focused on LinkedIn, with perhaps one other social media aplication link listed on their website. This trend is disappointing, but we can understand the need to conserve resources during a time that can be confusing.

Regarding text-based social media apps, we have seen that Threads has taken the lead as an alternative to Twitter/X, it's currently at 400 million users. Threads is in the Meta (Facebook, Instagram) family and leverages the company's AI engine to provide a content stream that feels more personalized to the user. They recently rolled out advertisements, which is also good news for life science companies. Although, we'd urge you to build your presence there organically, first, before advertising there.

At this point you may be asking yourself, where's the insightful life science marketing I was promised in this section?

The bad news is that we couldn't find a great example of a life science company engaging on Threads. The good news is that we found a great article on the use of Threads for pharma companies. This article gives some great advice and examples from top companies such as Amgen and Boehringer-Ingelheim. It even addresses the issue that "science Twitter" has been difficult to recreate.

In summary, we urge you to read the above-linked article and do some research on using Threads, and try it out. If it's not a fit for you, we encourage you to revisit your 2026 social media plans, and reach out to us if you'd like help.

That's a wrap for this edition of the BioBrand Labs Notebook, check out the Biotech Networks media kit for your 2026 planning. We'll see you in January, we've got some exciting developments ... distilling βš—οΈ!
