SSTI Profile: BHI’s Rich Bendis on Building and Scaling Innovation Ecosystems

Richard Bendis has significant experience building biotech clusters in formerly “flyover” regions (e.g., places that lack the infrastructure to support tech-based entrepreneurs and companies). Around 2009-2010, he was giving a presentation at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., on how to build these regions around an industry-driven private-public partnership. After the talk, someone from Johns Hopkins approached him and said they had been trying—with little success—to build a biotech cluster in Maryland. They asked him to come to Montgomery County, Maryland, the epicenter of the region’s life sciences industry.

WBJ: Gaithersburg's 20/20 BioLabs files to go public after merger falls through

Gaithersburg cancer diagnostics company 20/20 BioLabs Inc. is looking to go public, again — six months after a planned merger that would’ve taken it public fell through.

The company has signaled an intention to list on the Nasdaq Stock Market under ticker symbol “AIDX” through what’s known as a direct listing, 20/20 reported in Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

It’s not a traditional initial public offering in which underwriters offer shares on the public market. In this case, 20/20 BioLabs would list on the exchange and existing stockholders could offer their shares for sale, providing those shareholders with a potential exit while raising the company's profile with a broader pool of investors.

Importantly, 20/20 wouldn’t have any role in setting the prices and, if the sales happen, wouldn’t get any proceeds from them. Up to 15.2 million shares could be offered for sale “at prevailing market prices,” the company said in a prospectus filed with the SEC this week.

WBJ: GSK's Rockville R&D campus preps for major renovation to attract new tenants

By Sara Gilgore – Staff Reporter, Washington Business Journal - The owner of GSK PLC’s soon-to-be-vacant Rockville R&D campus is gearing up for a significant renovation to reposition the site’s three buildings for a range of tenants — and not just biopharma companies.

San Francisco-based GI Partners plans to overhaul the 635,000-square-foot complex at 14200 Shady Grove Road after British pharmaceutical giant vacates when its lease runs out in June.

The work would modernize the space and create common areas for tenants to interact, said Matt Brady, president of Rockville’s Scheer Partners, which is marketing the property.

As to what types of tenants fill it? The buildings were created for scientific research, but could also serve other types of users — from government agencies to university research arms to quantum computing companies.

“It could take on a lot of different paths, even simultaneously,” Brady said.
