Life Sciences BC News

What an eventful week it has been since our last BioLinks update! Last Thursday, our community came together for our annual Invest in BC presented by Lumira Ventures, which unites companies, investors and sector leaders for an action-packed day of pitching, networking, and thought leadership.

This year’s in-person event was at full capacity, welcoming companies, investors, industry organizations, healthcare providers, service providers, and government officials from across Canada, the United States, China, and Japan.

We were delighted to see strong representation from key organizations such as Trade & Invest British Columbia and Global Affairs Canada. Attendees also heard insightful remarks from The Honourable Brenda Bailey and Fazil Mihlar, the Minister and Deputy Minister of BC's Ministry of JEDI.

The 25 company pitches were of the highest calibre, and the atmosphere in the room throughout the day and during the networking reception was electric!

You can learn more about the exciting pitching company innovations here.

Thank you to our generous sponsors and supporters for making this incredible event possible.

The Okanagan life sciences sector's energy, passion, and innovation shone brightly at this week’s Showcase Series: Kelowna event! Bringing the regional community together was a tremendous experience.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our speakers who shared invaluable insights, including Phil Barker and Dr. Thuy Dang of the University of British Columbia – Okanagan, one of our event sponsors, as well as Dr. Francois Louw of UBC’s Department of Family Practice, Chris Bunka of Lexaria Bioscience, Carollynn Schafer of Accelerate Okanagan, Dr. Deanne Taylor from Interior Health, and Roger Francis of Michael Smith Health Research BC, also an event sponsor. Thanks to all the participants for making this another excellent showcase event!

While in Kelowna, we took the opportunity to present to an enthusiastic audience of students at the University of British Columbia - Okanagan (UBCO) on the many employment opportunities in BC's growing life sciences sector. Students also enjoyed engaging presentations from LifeLabs Medical Laboratory ServicesLexaria Bioscience, and the Interior Health Authority, which provided valuable real-world insights.

While at UBCO, we visited the School of Engineering and learned more about the Faculty of Science's ambitious plans for a Master of Biotechnology program, aiming to bridge the gap between academic institutions and the biotechnology industry.

Kelowna's remarkable talent, energy, and enthusiasm underpin the growing strength of the Okanagan life sciences sector!

We're thrilled to announce that we are one of the delivery partners for the new AccelerateIP (AIP) program, a groundbreaking initiative led by New Ventures BC in partnership with Innovate BC, which provides startups with valuable education and support to safeguard, manage, and maximize the potential of their intellectual property.
