CEO MESSAGE
This month, I was honoured to be a speaker for Junior Achievement of BC’s presentation on “The Future of Work and Emerging Careers” to showcase our thriving life sciences sector. Designed for children in grades four to 12, this event helps students explore their career goals - and what a joy it was to share the countless opportunities within the life sciences sector with the “next generation” of changemakers!

In keeping with the theme of new and upcoming opportunities, we’d like to share an open call for partners in talent and workforce development from The Digital Technology Supercluster. If you are an organization that is focused on digital skilling, workforce development and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, we encourage you to express your interest. Next Thursday, May 5th, Digital Technology Supercluster is also hosting a webinar entitled “IP strategies to enable scale-ups”, which is an opportunity to learn from industry thought leaders from the Innovation Asset Collective, Terramera and Northworks IP. We’re also thrilled to highlight Genome BC’s Geneskool program, which provides free remote learning resources for in the genomics field. And, if you are looking to meet and network with individuals who are defining the future of precision medicine, UBC’s School of Biomedical Engineering’s Fourth Annual Symposium is open for registration.

Speaking of technology to advance and improve health care, I’m also pleased to be a panelist at the upcoming TEC Vancouver 2022 “Virtual+” Conference on May 13-14. This is a great opportunity for anyone in the health care and life sciences community to take part in positive discussion and networking. Another way to affect impactful change would be to join Women-in-BIO, which is currently seeking executives for its new Excellence in Canadian Board Governance program.

Congratulations to Drs. David Harriman, Sonny Thiara, Karen Tran and Darwin Yeung on receiving VCHRI Investigator Awards. Supported by the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation, these awards provide increased support to researchers from Vancouver Coastal Health and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia to generate new knowledge in health care. Kudos also to TRIUMF Innovations Inc.’s Kathryn Hayashi for being recognized with the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council ’s Not-For-Profit Advocacy Award.

Investment opportunities in our sector also continue to make headlines: Epitopea announced a $14 million seed investment from top-tier life sciences investors, including Novateur Ventures. And, InvesTech Vancouver was held at Fasken Canada, a half day program for Canadian companies interested in expanding to the USA.

This week marks the 20th National Immunization Awareness Week. The last few years have proven the importance of immunizations, and we’d like to take this opportunity to recognize the tenacity and dedication of the countless scientists involved in creating vaccines that keep us safe. To this point, the recipients of the seventh annual Governor General’s Innovation Awards have been announced. Among the recipients are Dr. Pieter R. Cullis, Dr. Michael J. Hope, and Dr. Thomas D. Madden, who are collectively being recognized with the Governor General’s Innovation Award for developing systems to enable RNA and DNA based drugs to be used therapeutically.

Lastly, LSBC is proud to host our Showcase Series: Surrey event on May 11th. Register now to learn more about the cutting-edge research being done in Surrey and Greater Vancouver!
