CEO MESSAGE
There’s some great news in our sector that I’m excited to share with you this week!

First off, congratulations to Vancouver spinal surgeon, Dr. Brian Kwon who was one of the winners of the inaugural Craig H. Neilsen Visionary Award last October. Dr. Kwon, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Spinal Cord Injury and Marcel Dvorak Chair in Spinal Trauma at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), has donated his $1 million award to establish a “Living Lab” for spinal cord injury research and care, centred at VGH, UBC Hospital, and the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre.
In other great news, Life Sciences BC member, NervGen Pharma Corp. was able to give a positive update on its phase 1 clinical trial at the recent American Neurological Association Annual meeting held virtually this past week. The study demonstrated that NVG-291 was well tolerated and had favorable pharmacokinetic properties.

I’d also like to congratulate another LSBC member and one of our award alums, Aurinia Pharmaceuticals. The company is a finalist in this year’s Scrip Awards under the Best New Drug - Non-COVID category for their Lupus nepthritis treatment, LUPKYNIS. You can see the shortlist reveal here and also watch here, when Aurinia won our own LSBC Deal of the Year award in September. The Scrip Awards will be presented during a ceremony in London, UK this December. All the best Aurinia!

In November, we’re holding our sixth annual Invest in BC, presented by Lumira Ventures. We now have over 250 investors from 31 countries registered to listen as 31 investor-ready BC life sciences companies present their pitches. I’m excited at how much interest there has been in this event, with the majority of investor interest registering before the companies were announced. As one of our investment- and innovation-focused signature events, I am proud to see that our LSBC programs and initiatives raise the life sciences profile at home and abroad. A big thank you to all our event sponsors, including Lumira Ventures, our presenting sponsor, and conference partner, adMare Bioinnovations. There’s a full list and registration link on the event website.

If you didn’t catch Wednesday’s webinar on IP and drug discovery, you can catch the recording here. Medicago’s Senior Supervisor in Intellectual Property, Isabelle Riedl described how the company managed IP protections for its plant-based biotherapeutics, while Sonia Ziesche, Principal and Patent Agent with event sponsor, Gowling WLG, noted that patents are for business planning too.

“Implement your IP strategy early on,” she advises.

Moderator, Brian Kingwell, who is a Partner with Gowling WLG summarized the whole IP discussion with advice to be active around IP strategy, noting that "a patent is not a patent is not a patent — they come in all sorts of flavours." Listen to the whole event on our YouTube channel.

Finally, Life Sciences BC was recognized this week in BC’s Legislature. Parliamentary Secretary for Technology and Innovation, Brenda Bailey, made remarks on increasing the representation of women in the tech sector during Private Members’ Motions. While pointing out the need to continue to focus on increasing diversity in our innovation sectors, MLA Bailey highlighted the following 25 female leaders. I am proud to be included on the list, alongside other female colleagues from our sector. Issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion are top of mind for LSBC, and we are focused on supporting our members in this area.

From MLA Bailey: “Here are 25 inspiring leaders for the young women interested in careers in tech to follow. In fact, if you're a mom or a dad, I encourage you to sit down at LinkedIn and follow these folks and point out to your children the extraordinary work that they are doing every day in our province. These are in no particular order. Veronique Lecault, who is the chief operating officer at AbCellera. Kristen Sutton is the chief technology and innovation officer at Vancity. Denise Williams, CEO at the First Nations Tech Council. Nerissa Allen, president at the Black Business Association of B.C. Jean Marie Owens, VP of operations at Phoenix Lab. Dr. Annette Rosik, chief science officer at Terramera. Jeanette Jackson, CEO at Foresight Cleantech Accelerator Centre. Alina Marley, CEO at Vancouver Economic Commission — congratulations on that change, Alina. Kim Caplin, a former executive at plenty of fish and now the founder and CEO at Snack. Stephanie Hollingshead, CEO of HR Tech Group, doing great work in diversity, equity and inclusion. Christy Wyatt, CEO at Absolute Software. Sue Paish, CEO at Canada's Digital Supercluster. Jill Tipping, CEO of the B.C. Tech Association. Dr. Alicia Maine, special adviser on innovation to the vice president of research at SFU. Angie Shick, executive director at New Ventures B.C. Wendy Hurlburt, president and CEO, Life Sciences B.C.”

The full session is available via Hansard’s draft transcript.

And don’t miss this mention of Star Trek turning up in news about one of our members. Aspect Biosystems has a wonderful feature in The Globe and Mail this week, describing the Star Trek ecosystem’s Replicator as inspiration for 3D tissue printing.
