Life Sciences BC News

I was delighted to be part of last week's Biomedical Engineering and Health Technology Showcase at the University of Victoria, providing valuable insights into the latest biomedical and health technology developments and featuring compelling speakers, a poster contest, an exciting pitch competition, networking opportunities, and more.

Thanks to Dr. Christopher Dennison, Director of Biomedical Engineering, and his team for a dynamic day of collaboration and innovation!

Last week we also had the pleasure of partnering with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Vancouver for a full-house networking event hosted by Dutch Consul General Mr. Sebastiaan Messerschmidt.

This inaugural life sciences event with the Dutch Consul on the West Coast united representatives from the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, the BC government, companies, investors, and sector leaders. We anticipate furthering connections between BC and the Netherlands for enhanced global health outcomes.

The LSBC team had a fantastic time in picturesque Victoria, BC, for this week's inaugural Vancouver Island Winter Social! While on the island, we met with University of Victoria President Kevin Hall, and Lisa Kalynchuk and Fraser Hof, the VP and Assistant VP of Research and Innovation, to discuss the exciting R&D initiatives at UVIC. Another highlight of our visit was a tour of Redlen Technologies, a medical device and technology company, courtesy of its COO, Jim Balcom.

The winter social event, generously hosted by Scott Phillips and his team at StarFish Medical, Canada's largest Medical Device company, was a sold-out affair that brought together the Vancouver Island sector for an evening of networking and camaraderie. Notable attendees included sector leader Alan Winter, Adjunct Professor at UVIC and Former BC Innovation Commissioner. We were privileged to have The Honourable Brenda Bailey, BC's Minister of JEDI, share remarks during the event.

As the second-largest life sciences cluster in B.C., Vancouver Island is home to 15% of the province's life sciences companies, and this vibrant community is steadily growing. We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to making our visit memorable and incredibly enjoyable!

We send our congratulations to PEI BioAlliance for its significant role in completing a $90 million-plus biologics expansion at BIOVECTRA's new Biomanufacturing Centre in Charlottetown. This milestone is crucial for Prince Edward Island's bioscience sector and Canada's biomanufacturing capacity, supporting domestic production for vaccines and therapeutics, strengthening the life sciences sector, and creating well-paying jobs in the region. Exciting times for PEI! Learn more.
