Life Sciences BC News
Our Access to Innovation Conference, held yesterday, brought together over 200 life sciences stakeholders from research, academia, and industry for an exciting day of thought leadership and dialogue. The conference covered a wide range of topics, including immuno-engineering, precision medicine, clinical trials, IP strategy, vaccines, strategies for sector growth, the talent pipeline, and more.
We wrapped up programming with a fireside chat with The Honourable Brenda Bailey, BC's Minister of Jobs, Economic Development, and Innovation. Minister Bailey recognized the importance of the life sciences sector to BC's ecosystem and reconfirmed the province's commitment to developing a life sciences strategy as part of the StrongerBC Economic Plan. Additionally, she touched on the critical need for talent and expressed BC's commitment to fostering a collaborative partnership with industry, citing the recent historic announcement of the new National Biomanufacturing Training Centre as an example of their intent to leverage federal funding.
The event also included a presentation by Linda Buchanan, Chair of the Invest Vancouver Management Board and Mayor of the City of North Vancouver, who provided an excellent overview of Invest Vancouver's soon-to-be-released life sciences report.
During the event, Boehringer Ingelheim Canada announced an exciting new partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health and VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, which is committed to creating a sustainable healthcare system to benefit future generations. The partnership will focus on funding innovation initiatives in planetary health, Indigenous health and chronic disease.
This annual conference is a true team effort, with leaders and organizations throughout our ecosystem volunteering their time to speak, supporting the event, and coming together to learn, engage, and network. We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic life sciences ecosystem within BC. Thank you all!
On February 28th, the world observes Rare Disease Day, an annual global event that aims to increase awareness about rare diseases, their impact on patients' lives, and the need for research, collaboration, and improved access to medical care for those affected.
