Autism: overview of service dog experiences of parents and siblings

Monday, April 24, 2023

9:00 am - 10:30 am PDT

1.5 CEU credits

Presented by: Stéphanie-M. Fecteau PhD., ps.ed.

Description

Parents occupy a vital role supporting their children on the autism spectrum. Historically, they also played a crucial role in advocacy, leading to important changes in perceptions of autism. The parental experience will address stress imposed by these roles and how some parents may adapt. We will address evolution in autism terminology and representations as well as advances in research. We will then introduce one alternative intervention growing in popularity, the adoption of a service dog by the family. Details pertaining to helping ensure success of this intervention will be highlighted.
