Course themes

A. Theoretical: During the four-day course, participants will receive presentations on the biology of flies and maggots, how to maintain a laboratory colony of flies and produce disinfected maggots for treatment, ethical and legal issues related to MT, assessment and documentation of patient history, comparison between cage-like and biobag dressings, number of maggots to be used, duration of treatment, sterile working conditions, potential side effects and contraindications, potential side effects and contraindications, mechanism of action, evidence of efficacy, interactions with patients and healthcare providers, maggot removal, immunologic interactions during MT, chronic wounds, wound management modalities, surgical management, post-MT management modalities and collaboration with other disciplines, and the use of MT in emergency situations. The course will also cover the use of MT in different regions, including the USA and Canada by Ronald Sherman, the UK by Yamni Nigam, Mexico and South America by Jose Contreras Ruiz, Australia by Frank Stadler, Israel by Kosta Y. Mumcuoglu, and Turkey by Aysegul Taylan-Ozkan, Bayram Colak, Alper Erkin, and Ugur Uslu. B. Practical: The hands-on exercises will include examining flies and maggots in the laboratory, applying maggots to dummy models, observing the treatment of patients with maggots, and observing the results after 48 hours.


Trip to Ephesus: During the course, a one-day excursion will be organized to Ephesus, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites and tourist attractions in the country. (optional): $100


Participants/Prerequisites: This course is designed for physicians and nurses who are interested in using maggot therapy in their respective countries.


Course fee: $ 900.


Hotel (optional): $50 (limited number) - 100/day


Course credits: Upon passing the final exams, participants will receive a certification of attendance from the International Biotherapy Society

Westmead Hospital takes center stage for phage therapy documentary ‘Last Chance to Save a Life’


Westmead Hospital in the Westmead Health Precinct is showcased in an upcoming SBS documentary called ‘Last Chance to Save a Life’, focusing on the incredible work being done with bacteriophages – or ‘phages’ for short – in the fight against serious illnesses.

Phage therapy is explored in this real-time documentary, following Westmead Hospital specialist Professor Jon Iredell and his team.
