Bioavailability of Mercury in
Power Plant Wastewater

Power Plant Wastewater Standard regulatory practices limit the total concentration of toxic metals, such as mercury, when discharged from industrial sources, ignoring the importance of speciation and bioavailability. This can result in dischargers spending more on wastewater treatment than might be necessary for adequate environmental protection. In a new article by author Robin Reash, data from Brooks Applied Labs is used to support the conclusion that by utilizing analyses for bioavailable forms of mercury, such as acid-labile mercury and methylmercury, the regulatory limits imposed are likely overly conservative. The article, published in August 2018 in the SETAC journal Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management, is available on-line here. Contact us today for more information on our specialty analytical services for the speciation of mercury.

BAL Giving Back for the Holidays

Volunteers of America - Sultan Food Bank - Western Washington Here at BAL we take pride in our willingness to help out in our community. BAL's charitable giving committee, BAL Gives, has selected to support the Sultan Food Bank. Each month this small food bank serves over 800 low income individuals from approximately 325 households throughout the rural 25-mile Sky Valley stretch between Sultan and Skykomish, Washington. Last year, BAL donated over 120 pounds of food and household goods to the Sultan Food Bank, and this year we hope to break our donation record! Stay tuned to see how BAL will continue to support our community in December.
