Biochemistry and Origin of Life Apologetics

GHCA will meet in person and online on September 1^st at 7 pm in the Reception Room of Houston’s First. The best parking is in the small lot just behind the big cross. The Reception Room is the door with crosshatched walkway and covered doorway. 

Our speaker will be Mr. Steve Lem who has done several excellent presentations in the past on apologetics issues. On 9/1 Steve’s topic will be the origin of life and related apologetics. The origin of life in the first living cell is possibly the most important issues in science. 

The origin of information and language is essential for living systems. The only known source of information is intelligence. Information never arises from random processes. Information is itself immaterial and in order to be useful, it must be encoded in some system of symbols that exists in a physically stable and enduring form. Language is such a system of encoding information in a physically enduring form.

Engineers and scientists use many forms of language to analyze, design, document and manufacture useful devices. English is my first language for documentation widely understood by others. That engineering documentation can be accurately translated into hundreds of other languages and used to describe the same device in all of those languages. The same information can be encoded in all the vast array of different  languages. 

Another language I use is mathematics and that language is the same all over the world. Mathematics is far more precise and analytical than languages like English.

Drawings are another kind of language engineers use to encode many subtle physical relationships in a system of drawing symbols. For example I generate many electronic circuit diagrams. Then printed circuit board diagrams show the precise physical shape, size, and forms that implement the information in the circuit diagrams. Then mechanical assembly diagrams must be used to assemble the physical parts and components into a working device. So, you can now see that electrical engineering uses several languages working together to organize and analyze and document all of the different kinds of information. 

Consider music for a moment and the language expressed in printed sheet music. Many people understand just how musicians read the information in all those lines and dots and squiggles and interpret from it the sounds that the composer intends to be heard. All of that sound is imbodied in a set of vibrations in the air. However, our ears and brains translate those sound waves into something quite different which we experience as music, with great delight. 

Now consider the simplest possible form of life. Living systems are vastly more complex than all of the above science and design technology with it’s multiple layers of technical languages. 

The biochemistry going on in even the simplest living cell is far from being fully understood. Now for the big questions: Where did that information come from? How does it work to sustain life? Where is the information encoded and stored? How does it control the order of events? The system of answers for such questions is called apologetics. Steve Lem will bring a fascinating presentation on the most important questions in the physical world. Don’t miss it.
