Dr. Yusuf was awarded his PhD in Medical Entomology and Vector Control in 2020, and now practices maggot therapy as a member of the Department of Microbiology at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano, Nigeria. Additional details about Dr. Yusuf's background can be found in his interview, further on in this newsletter.

An Interview with Dr. Mustapha Yusuf |

Dr. Mustapha Ahmed Yusuf earned his PhD in Medical Entomology and Vector Control from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran from 2016-2020. He practices Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) and believes that the public should embrace maggot debridement therapy as a viable treatment option for wound care because it is affordable, easy to administer, effective, and safe. Dr. Yusuf practices MDT alongside microbiologists and nurses in the Department of Microbiology at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, a tertiary medical center in Kano, Nigeria. He also occasionally works with orthopedic and plastic surgeons. Dr. Yusuf usually connects with patients either through referrals from other physicians or through patients with previous MDT experiences. The maggots that he utilizes in his treatment are currently supplied by a local institution. He notes that the maggots will be bred and supplied from within Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in the near future. Dr. Yusuf believes that patient education and thorough training of therapists are beneficial in helping patients make well-informed decisions about their treatment options. When asked how the BTER foundation can help him in his mission, he responded, “The research, training and education on biotherapy by the foundation is most commendable.”

If you are a wound care clinician, then you are invited to attend a complimentary online event, Biofilm-Based Wound Care: A Virtual Skills Workshop, on Friday, September 24, 2021(available for 2-weeks on-demand), hosted by WoundCon.
Biofilm is present in most chronic and hard-to-heal wounds, creating a barrier to wound healing. Implementing a biofilm-based wound care approach will support the effective management of those wounds, save costs, cut antibiotic usage and put patients on a healing trajectory. As many of our members and subscribers know, maggots have been demonstrated to dissolve and inhibit the growth of biofilm. This program is likely not to cover the use of maggot therapy for biofilm, but it will discuss other methods, and facilitate practicing those skills in your own home or office.
The instructors for the workshop, Catherine Milne, APRN, MSN, ANP/ACNS-BC, CWOCN-AP and Jayesh Shah, MD, MHA, will provide didactic lectures and live cadaveric demonstrations from the anatomy lab. The workshop will be available in 8 different languages including Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, Polish, German and English. You will be eligible to receive a certificate of participation for up to 5.25 CME/CE credits (AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™).
