Ferndale Refinery team members win a 2022 Golden Shield Award!
The 2022 Golden Shield Awards winners were announced earlier this week. Ferndale Refinery was one of 12 teams to win a GSA - the company's highest honor. The winners from Ferndale Refinery include:
Life Saver category: Ferndale Emergency Response Team Saves a Life, Ferndale Refinery
Mike Cherochak and Mike Welch
Back in October, these two gentlemen were part of a team of individuals who responded to a medical emergency in the office section of the Whatcom County Emergency Operating Center located in Bellingham, Washington. Phillips 66 Ferndale Refinery personnel had been on site for a planned worst-case oil spill drill when the emergency occurred.
Six Phillips 66 EMTs responded to the emergency, assessed the situation, and followed all protocols. After the initial assessment it was determined that a 911 call was needed with rapid transport to the nearest hospital. At the hospital it was discovered the individual had suffered a brain aneurysm and was immediately transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington for emergency surgery. The surgery was successful and the person is making a miraculous recovery after spending a couple of months in Harborview, she has been released to home care. While she may have a long road to recovery, she is getting better every day.
This person was alone in her office at the Whatcom County EOC when other staff became aware of an issue, but thanks to quick thinking and a rapid response from our trained EMTs, a life has been saved.
“The fact that Liz is alive today is an absolute miracle. The rapid assessment and initial treatment by the Phillips 66 EMTs allowed Liz to be immediately moved to the ambulance when it arrived and quickly delivered to the Emergency Room. I am afraid to think of what the outcome could have been without them being on site that day for training. We are so lucky to have the local partnership with our Ferndale Phillips 66 team”. - Bellingham Fire Chief Bill Hewett
The rest of the responding team members were: Ronnie Thompson, Danny Tarkington, Jessica Harman, Autumn Munkirs, and Jamie Wells. Please join us in congratulating this amazing team for their outstanding efforts!
Congratulations gentlemen!
