✨February✨

Member of the Month

We’re excited to recognize Birch Bay Lawn Care as our February Member of the Month! While their beautiful landscaping work speaks for itself, we especially want to thank Randy and his team for the countless ways they support our organization behind the scenes.

From maintaining the foliage around our signage, helping keep parking areas event-ready, to jumping in on the many odd jobs that come with community events, their willingness to help has made a real difference over the years. That kind of reliable, can-do support is invaluable—and deeply appreciated.

Thank you, Birch Bay Lawn Care, for everything you do to help our community look its best and run smoothly. We’re grateful for your continued partnership! 🌿💙

Member of the Week

✨Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center✨

This week, we’re excited to spotlight the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center (WDRC)!

Founded in 1992 by community volunteers, WDRC envisions a Whatcom County where people approach conflict in creative, healthy, and productive ways. Their work goes beyond conflict intervention to include conflict prevention, offering education and support for youth, adults, families, organizations, and businesses throughout the county.

WDRC provides a wide range of services designed to help individuals and groups navigate challenging situations:

  • Mediation – Voluntary and confidential conflict resolution with a neutral, trained mediator.
  • Training & Education – A diverse selection of classes, from parent education to understanding conflict and mediation skills.
  • Facilitation – Support for small or large groups working toward shared goals, helping guide productive conversations and find common ground.
  • Coaching – One-on-one, customized support to help individuals navigate conflict with confidence.
  • Supervised Visitations – Safe, supportive spaces for parents and children to spend time together, guided by trained Visit Supervisors.

These resources are available to anyone in Whatcom County. Be sure to check out WDRC’s upcoming spring trainings, including The Art of Accountability, Understanding Conflict, and Professional Mediation Training.

To learn more, visit the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center’s website and explore how they’re helping build a stronger, more connected community.

Community Highlight

Fund Schools Now - A Parent Group

Watch the town hall video above discussing Blaine Schools funding town hall from January 6.

A Message from Fund Schools Now:

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the Town Hall (click for video recording) in Blaine on Tues, Jan 6 – educators, school board members, students, community members! An especially heartfelt thank you to the student leaders who so bravely shared the realities of their educational experience. Thank you to the superintendents who gave a unified message of concern and who spoke with such care and compassion about the opportunities our students have. And, last but not least, thank you to our legislators who committed to continuing to fight for K-12 education. It is an incredible thing to bring so many different groups together with a unified message advocating for public education.

One resounding message that stood out was the need for sustainable funding. With the current prototypical funding model falling short of fully funding education, we need to be looking to other solutions that can provide stable, sustainable funding that can allow districts to make long term plans that support their intended outcomes, instead of making reactionary decisions because of the unpredictability of funding. A superintendents group from across the state addressing this very issue just released a problem statement looking at identifying key areas that need to be addressed. See the attached file to learn more about the work that group is doing.

The legislative session is racing along. The session will run through March 12. During this session, we need to continue to send the message that K-12 education is prioritized in the state’s operating budget. To stay engaged and continue to be a part of the conversation, follow along on our Facebook group for action alerts. However, we will not be able to have a huge impact alone. Do you know people in other parts of the state who care about K-12 education? Talk with them about what they are experiencing and encourage them to engage with their legislators.

Share the town hall video and our website with anyone you know that is concerned with the current state of our schools. Our kids deserve more and together we can help ensure that EVERY student has access to quality public education in Washington!

In gratitude,

The Fund Schools Now Team
