Kites for Kids Day Recap:
Our first big event of 2021 was a huge success! The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce handed out almost 300 kites to kids and we estimate that we had between 500 & 700 attendees throughout the day!
Friends of Birch Bay Library served delicious hot dogs alongside Baily's Lemonade Stand. Kona Ice of Bellingham was a huge hit on this very warm day! The activities put together by Blaine-Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2 were amazing and kept kids busy throughout the afternoon. The storytimes with our wonderful community members like Dr. Granger, Superintendant of Blaine School District, Derek Jones Birch Bay's Neighborhood Deputy, Wendy & Mike with his Story Bike from Whatcom County Library System, and Dianne Marrs-Smith President of Friends of Birch Bay Library, were a huge hit. It was so fun to see children enjoying storytime on the lawn of the future Birch Bay Library!
Thank you to our dedicated sponsors!
Without them, events like this would not be possible!

Burn Ban Effective Starting 5:00 PM 6/25

Please Help Protect Vulnerable Birch Bay "Berm" Plantings this July 4th & Everyday!

The newly completed Birch Bay “Berm” includes over 110,000 young native plants that will restore shoreline habitat, help protect the beach from erosion during winter storms, and reduce project costs. Anyone celebrating Independence Day is asked to partner with Public Works in protecting these plants. Please stay on designated paths and keep off of the plantings. Once established, these plants will be an important aspect of erosion protection for the beach.

In addition to the positive environmental features of the plantings, their preservation also has financial importance. The County is required to replace damaged plants in the next several years, so protecting them helps keep project costs down and saves thousands of dollars for future road projects.

“If you protect the plants now when they are young, they will help protect your beach, roadway, and homes from erosion and flooding once they mature,” said Marie Duckworth, Public Works Communications Specialist. “We want to remind beachgoers that these young and vulnerable plants are yours to protect.”

Find out more on the Birch Bay “Berm” also known as the Birch Bay Drive and Pedestrian Facility on the project website.

Legal Fireworks:
Consumer fireworks sold at a Washington State Licensed and Whatcom County Permitted stand are allowed to be used in the county.  The Washington State Patrol has a list of legal and illegal fireworks on its website.

Illegal Fireworks:
M-80’s and larger, dynamite and any improvised, homemade, or altered explosive devices such as tennis balls or cherry bombs are illegal explosive devices. Persons in possession or using illegal explosive devices can be charged with a felony.
