Shekinah can wear a twist out for one week or more. By the second week, she may re-twist at night -- using moisturizer, conditioner and/or a little bit of water -- a few spots that may no longer have the desired contour and untwist again in the morning. Here's Shekinah's step by step guide to achieve this look:
1. Wash & Condition hair
2. Comb or pick through hair to loosen tangles
3. While wet, oil scalp & moisturize shaft
4.* While wet, set hair into two strand twists using a little bit of Organic Root Stimulator's Lock and Twist Gel (Jello-like product in jar with purple lid) on just about each twist. If hair starts drying out while twisting, spray with water and reapply moisturizer and/or conditioner. Twisting the hair when it is drying out prevents the twists from setting as smoothly, making the hair prone to frizz.
5. Untwist locks a few days later or once they are dry
6. Sleep with a satin cap at night or on a satin pillow case. For flatter look, tie hair down with a scarf.
7.** Poof out in the morning (with a little moisturizer, oil, silicon based or other frizz-control type product as necessary).
8. Spot twist if hair gets wet or otherwise to freshen the look.
* Step 4 is the main way I achieve the hairstyle, but really technique and product probably depend on hair texture.
a. TECHNIQUE - Flat twists, 3-strand braids, corn rows or Nubian knots may work better for some to achieve the same look.
b. PRODUCT - Also, as far as product, essentially use whatever makes the hair set. (I like Organic Root Stimulator's Lock and Twist gel because for me it sets the twist without drying my hair out. You can purchase this product at Wal-mart and just about any hair supply.)
c. OTHER - Finally, if the hair texture is prone to "unravel" and not want to stay set, then sitting under the dryer immediately after setting and/ or use of hair pins & clips may be necessary.
** Step 7 also may vary. I do not use product on my hair every day, but it just depends on the look you are going for, how well your hair holds up overnight, and your natural moisture & sheen versus how frizz-prone the hair may be.
