MEMO'S LETTERS FROM LOVE CAFE

Letter#38

March 10, 2013

"Imagine the way this ancient commune of hundred that discovered truth and love would live. Wouldn't the very way of their living naturally be spiritual? They would all love one another selflessly. They would help one another whenever needed. They would share the things they have willingly and happily, simply because they love each other. They would simply be like a family of sisters and brothers. The secret key of this commune would be 'selflessness', as they would have discovered the absolute fact that love and selfishness cannot coexist."

Birth of Spirituality

When and why did ancient humanity demand spirituality? What is the origin of it? When did it all begin?

Let's take a journey back to the very ancient times when humanity first began. To make it very very simple, try to imagine yourself as a member of the commune of the first hundred human beings on earth. You found yourself on planet earth knowing absolutely nothing about anything. You have already seen the death of some members of the commune, and you understood they left permanently, and one day you too will have to leave, but the survival instinct in you is naturally fighting to find for food. You are basically in the middle of an unknown chaos both inwardly and outwardly, and out of this great uncertainty the first drop of fear has fallen into your mind, and that is where the demand and the need for spirituality, god or a creator came into being. So, out of fear, ancient spirituality has begun. As fear is darkness, such form of spirituality whose origin is darkness or which came into being as a reaction to darkness of fear cannot lead to light. Light has absolutely no relationship with darkness, and this includes the opposites type of relationship. Each opposite has its roots in its own opposite, and without one the other cannot exist by itself. But, is light the opposite of darkness, or does light exist alone by itself?

Apart from such type of spirituality which started out of fear, and which continued until today; were there other human beings at the very beginning of humankind who lived differently, and their very way of living was naturally spiritual? Let's imagine another commune of hundred at the very beginnings of life on earth whose members have discovered for themselves to love one another by questioning everything to find out the truth of life for themselves instead of going for the easy way of believing in an idea of god that was born out of fear and uncertainty .They had to discover such truth and love by themselves because fortunately or unfortunately there were no saviors, no gurus, no Jesus, no Buddha then to instruct them. So, they had to find out for themselves the truth of life simply because they had no other choice. So, think of yourself as one of these ancient human beings, and ask yourself the question, "What would I do without Jesus, the Buddha or my petty little guru etc.?". And, once this question is put honestly to oneself, the truth of spirituality will come into being naturally. And, that is there is no need for any savior or guru to be spiritual. Such ancient people had to do their inward job by themselves by putting their teeth into this thing to find out, because fortunately there was no guru business then. And, this is the only way to be truly spiritual. There is no other way. One must start one's spiritual path like the first human being who knows nothing about any form of spirituality, and walk from there to discover for oneself. After all, no book or no guru can teach what love is. Love is something we have to discover for ourselves. And, without love there is no spirituality.

Imagine the way this ancient commune of hundred that discovered truth and love would live. Wouldn't the very way of their living naturally be spiritual? They would all love one another selflessly. They would help one another whenever needed. They would share the things they have willingly and happily, simply because they love each other. They would never compare themselves with another inwardly; as such comparison is the greatest enemy of love. They would simply be like a family of sisters and brothers. The secret key of this commune would be 'selflessness', as they would have discovered the absolute fact that love and selfishness cannot coexist. This commune would be terribly spiritual. One could feel the true spirituality in the air the moment one goes into this commune. And, the irony would be that they would be truly and naturally spiritual simply because they had this quality of love, whereas modern humanity with its millions of books about spirituality simply does not love, and therefore they are playing with the fake idea of spirituality as a form of entertainment. In this commune, there would be no divisions as the skin color, nationality, religion, the beautiful and the ugly etc. There would be no spiritual levels either, like those who attained Nirvana, god, bliss etc as love knows no such different levels among human beings. They would simply be a commune living with love, and therefore they would be naturally spiritual without even knowing they are spiritual. And, this is the only way of being truly spiritual. Love, and one will be spiritual. And, for such love to come into being, one must understand the extremely subtle ways of the 'self' or the 'ego'. And, through such understanding and awareness, freedom from the 'self' will perhaps bring about this quality of love.

One might think, as many will, such way of living is nothing but an unattainable utopia. This inherently brings the question of whether true love is a utopia. Only those who are not willing to love will see it as a utopia. One might also think what difference would it make if one loves, where almost all the world is lacking this quality of love. This is the good old lazy trick. The answer to this is, "Let me love first and see what happens."  And, there have been rare individuals in the history of mankind who said so, and they made great difference by effecting human consciousness. If one individual radically changes his or her way of living , then that change will naturally have effect on the world.

Practical suggestions on spirituality:

-Understand love is the essence of a spiritual life, and without love there is no spirituality. But do not try to find the way to love. There is no such a thing as how to love. Love must flower naturally like the love of a mother for her baby. Love can not be learned from books or others. And you can not go towards it because it has not path. Just be aware of what love is not and such awareness itself will become the waves of love. See love is not jealousy, hatred, selfishness or comparing ourselves with the others.

-Understand that love and selfishness can not go together, and just be aware of selfishness with all its subtlety in your relationships with others. Do not try to be unselfish in order to be good, spiritual or loving, because trying to be unselfish in order to be good is still the activity of selfishness at a more subtle level. True goodness which has no selfishness in it must flower naturally because of seeing the danger of selfishness. Trying to build a good personality is just another game of selfishness. What is important is seeing and ending selfishness completely in any direction rather than building up an unselfish personality which really has no meaning.

-Never accept the authority of another in the spiritual area. Listen to what others are saying because wisdom implies one must have a state of mind which says "I do not know". Only then one can truly learn, but find out for yourself the truth or the falseness of what is being said.

-Be aware that love is the secret doctrine which by itself will easily bring perfect order, balance and happiness to our lives.

                        THE SECRET KEY

 The lone tree of the mountain tops whispered through silence;

"There is your beloved living in the kingdom of happiness

Memo Ozdogan
Memo Ozdogan

Dancing in bliss in the secret garden of love

What you begin to see is the door to this kingdom

What you should find is the secret key

Look for the beloved in the setting sun of far horizons

Search for her where the moon touches the waters

Get intoxicated with her smile shining through the stars

Smell her eternal beauty in the fresh morning breeze

Fall desperately in love with her and get lost

Rejoice in this love and dispel the darkness of fear

Let the light of joy touch the heart in this mad love

Free the all-consuming passion to light the fire

Listen to the song of the ecstatic unity

In that song lover becomes one with the beloved

Beloved then becomes life itself

And such love for her

The secret key..."

ABOUT

From his early twenties, Memo Ozdogan has had great passion and personal interest in exploring western and eastern philosophy in order to see and understand different approaches towards the subject of living. He has delved into modern psychology, the original teachings of the Buddha, J.Krishnamurti, Rumi, Ancient Greek philosophy, ancient forms of spirituality and new age spirituality.

After deeply studying all these various approaches, he tried to find out the original truth in each of these different approaches without becoming a static follower of any of them. He quotes: "life is a very dynamic and living thing which is ever-changing, and therefore no philosophy of the past can be applied directly to life which takes place in the present moment. Philosophy or teachings might point out an important truth and much can be learned from them but one should never get stuck at any of them since life must be explored from moment to moment and that means one must continue one's inner journey of discovery at this present moment. This is the only door opening to the path of true happiness and liberation".

Mr. Ozdogan, from time to time, practices such secret key life coaching as his hobby because of his deep passion to further his studies in these matters. His occasional coaching has included some celebrities and fortune 500 CEOs while he was residing in USA in 2001. He desires to share his understanding with others by having such life coaching sessions on finding one's "unique" secret key of life.
