July 2019
Happy 10th Birthday, PCL!
PCL celebrated its tenth birthday on Monday, July 1 in the same way it celebrated its first day in 2009 - with parties around the neighborhoods. Library users, staff, PCL Board members, Friends and guests assembled at 4:30PM at every location to enjoy cake and lemonade. The festivities are just the start of a special year for PCL and more events are planned.

PCL @ RI PrideFest
On Saturday, June 15, PCL had a booth at the Rhode Island PrideFest for the first time! With themed book raffles, crafts, and fun activities, library staff interacted with well over 200 attendees and spread the message that the library is a welcoming and safe space for the LGBTQ+ community.

Enjoy These Outdoor Activities From Your Library
At this time of year, it's nice to spend time out of doors while the days are long and the weather is good. PCL has a number of programs that will help you do just that!

Drag Queen Story Hour with Ms. Naomi Chomsky
PCL has partnered with the national nonprofit Drag Queen Story Hour to bring a fun and fabulous story time to Rochambeau's Children's Area. The event will be just as the title sounds - a drag queen reading age-appropriate books to families with children, followed by a craft or other fun creative activity. Ms Naomi will read picture books that help children develop empathy, learn about gender diversity and difference, as well as tap into their own creativity.

American Girl Doll Joins Collection
Washington Park has a new resident - and kids with a library card can take her home for a week!

The Broad Street library has acquired an American Girl doll, which is now available for loan with a special backpack kit. The backpack includes the doll, an American Girl story book and a journal, which kids can use to write about adventures with their doll friend.

More Improvements to Our Library Spaces
If you are in the Smith Hill area, please make time to visit our Candace Street/Mary C. Jones Memorial Way location and admire the beautiful new carpets now in place! Additionally, more work recently has been completed at Mount Pleasant (thank you Councilwoman Ryan), which now has an ADA compliant restroom on the first floor.
