If you are reading this after May 19th, I just had a birthday! I don't feel like I am 72! I don't think I look like I'm 72! And for goodness sake I don't know where the time has gone! It just seems like yesterday I was married, raising children and celebrating my 32nd birthday! Now, I am a great-grandmother aka "Great-Meme" for the second time and helping raise an adorable two-and-a-half-year-old little boy who is a handful! He would like his Meme to go "DOWN" the slide with him and play! But going "UP" the tube-like slide to fetch him when he got scared wasn't so easy! And the people at MacDonald's didn't seem to appreciate this "oversized child" in their play area! Oh well!
There ARE advantages of being 72 though! First, I love that number! There were 72 disciples that followed Jesus (Luke 10:1). There were 72 races that came from Noah and 72 languages resulting from the tower of Babel. I personally love the nations and want all races to follow Jesus! So that's a great start!
Secondly, I appreciate all I have learned through these 72 years! I really don't want to be 32 and learn it all over again! At 72 you can compliment a young man without him thinking you are flirting! And at 72 I love celebrating others wherever I am! The other day I walked out of a store where there were three young gals probably in their late teens facing me. They were beautiful as they sat on the bench that lined the edge of the sidewalk in front of the establishments. "Oh, my goodness!" I said, as all three looked up at me wondering what was my "Oh goodness-ing"about! "All three of you are gorgeous!!" With that they began to giggle. "You make me wish I was young again!" as I finished my compliment. They all beamed just knowing they had been affirmed. You know it doesn't take much to be kind!
Once when I was living at a Widows Home, I was helping a foster mother with the hair of her 10 and 12-year-old kids. Being an X-hairdresser I was glad to help as I kidded around with them. Suddenly one of the children turned to another and said, "See not all old people are mean!" I wasn't sure if it was a compliment being called old, but I decided to focus on the part that I wasn't mean. They saw kindness coming through! Why is it that when some get older, they get grumpy? This should not be! We should be an example, for we have had more years learning to let God's love flow through us!
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Eph 4:32)
Can I challenge you whether you are 72 or 32, to be kind!? Embrace where and who you are. Don't be someone you are not or the age you wish you were. Today can never be given back so grab ahold of it. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not ours yet. Enjoy the journey, and your birthday can be as happy as mine!
