NC Wesleyan Holds 80th Commencement Ceremony

On Saturday, December 5, North Carolina Wesleyan College held its Winter Commencement for 195 graduates on the front lawn of campus. This was the College's 80th graduation, with the first occurring in 1960. The closed event was open only to graduates, faculty and the platform party to allow the College to ensure physical distance and the safety of those participating. There were 18 international graduates from nine countries. This commencement also included the first cohort of Wesleyan's new Master's in Business Administration (MBA) program, with 22 students graduating. Read more.
NC Wesleyan Dedicates Scurry-Drum Theological Library Collection

North Carolina Wesleyan College recently procured a substantial theological library collection from the family of the late Rev. Dr. Frank Scurry. Dr. Scurry was president emeritus of the now defunct Carolina Graduate School of Divinity, an accredited interdenominational seminary located in Greensboro, NC.

Dr. Scurry pastored in the NC Yearly Meeting of Friends for 25 years before starting and leading Carolina Graduate School of Divinity in 1994. Upon closure of the institution, he sought to sell the collection of roughly 25,000 books. The collection contains approximately 17,000 volumes and represents a broad, balanced perspective on church history, theology, pastoral ministry, biblical studies and ethics. Read more.

Barry Nethercutt '86 and his family were featured recently by WRAL's Tar Heel Traveler Scott Mason. Their Nashville, NC home is the "Christmas Countdown House". Click to see their story. Barry graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.
Susan Powell Baker '80 recently celebrated 27 years as President/Owner of Pet's Best Friend, Inc. Located in Rocky Mount, NC, her business offers professional grooming of both dogs and cats, in-home pet sitting, doggie daycare, obedience classes, retail and a pet taxi service. Susan graduated summa cum laude with departmental honors from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1980 with a double major in mathematics and business administration.
Gray Basnight '75, has written a new thriller, Madness of the Q, released December 14, 2020. Once again, Gray's book features Professor Sam Teagarden, named for Jack Teagarden, his favorite NCWC English Professor. For more information on his book, visit graybasnight.com. Madness of the Q is also available on smile.Amazon.com. Gray earned his Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1975. After almost three decades in broadcast news, Gray now writes fiction.
Kristin D. Hurd '09 recently started a new position as Deputy Program Manager-Army National Guard at Verizon Business. She graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2009 with a BS in Biology and History. Kristin currently serves on the Alumni Board at NC Wesleyan. She has served on the Alumni Board since May, 2017.
Brian W. Flynn '69 recently collaborated with Canadian multi-instrumentalist J.P. Cormier and released the CD Campobello Sky (The Cormier Sessions). Click here to learn more or to purchase a CD or download music. Brian graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He is a retired Rear Admiral/Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service and serves currently as an Associate Director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, Department of Psychiatry, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, in Bethesda, MD.
Cassie Sullivan '18 was featured in The Wilson Times recently for helping a homeless veteran and his dog. A police officer with the city of WIlson, NC, Cassie met the homeless and disabled vet and his dog about six months ago. She, along with other agencies, helped get the vet clothing, food, shoes, dog food and a stable place to live. Cassie plans to continue helping people in need. "We are going to keep changing people's lives." Cassie graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2018 with a BA in Criminal Justice. She was a member of the women's soccer team

Matthew S. Brown '10, age 33, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2020. He was a graduate of Pitt Community College where he obtained a degree in Criminal Justice. Matthew earned his Bachelor's degree in Justice Studies with a minor in Psychology from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2010. He worked as a Corrections Officer with Maury Correctional Institute for more than 5 years. He is survived by his mother, father and his wife, six siblings, grandmother and several nieces and nephews.
