NCWC Welcomes Bishops Back to Campus Under Wesleyan Wise Safety Measures
North Carolina Wesleyan College kicked off its fall semester on August 19 by welcoming 275 new and 731 returning students to campus. Recruitment efforts for this incoming class were focused on local recruitment, a diverse representation and building upon the College's growing academic programs.
The College continues to see academic gains from adding a second graduate degree program. In January, Wesleyan began a second graduate program with the start of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. The Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) program began in spring 2017. NC Wesleyan has 120 students enrolled in both the MSCJ and the MBA programs. Complete article

Flag Raising Ceremony Held
|
In front of the Braswell Administration Building, two flag poles now flank the main flag pole thanks to the generosity of alumni, David Brady '67 and Faye Ellington Brady '65. The NC Wesleyan ROTC raised the American Flag, the State of North Carolina Flag and a North Carolina Wesleyan College Flag during a ceremony held August 17 to dedicate the new flag poles. Others participating in the ceremony were Eddie Coats (Vice President of Advancement), Rev. Dr. Barry Drum (Chaplain), Dr. Evan Duff (President), and Latisha Scott '06 (alumna and NCWC Alumni Board member).

David Brady is a 1967 graduate of NC Wesleyan with a degree in Mathematics. He played basketball and baseball while he was a student. His wife, Faye Ellington Brady, graduated in 1965 with a degree in Psychology. She was active in the SGA serving as an officer. The College is grateful for the Brady's generous support.

USA South Postpones Fall Sports

The USA South Conference has postponed conference competition for fall sports including cross country, football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball. The decision included many factors with primary intentions of providing a safe and effective on-campus environment, as well as to slow the spread of the Coronavirus. Read more.

2020 Omnium Features Interdisciplinary Writing Winners

The 2020 issue of Omnium: The Undergraduate Research Journal at North Carolina Wesleyan College, featuring the winners of this year's Interdisciplinary Writing Competition was recently released. The Omnium provides students a space to show how they excel in research and writing. James Allen Bailey, PhD '73 recently released his book "History of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation". Dr. Bailey served with the SBI in the mid 1970s. The book includes extensive details regarding interviews of former SBI agents and numerous North Carolina investigations, both solved and unsolved. The book was self-published by Bailey, allowing him to release the book much earlier and maintain complete creative control. He graduated from NC Wesleyan College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science.

Walter "Mac" Sykes '80 has been named the new NC Wesleyan Men's Golf Coach for the upcoming 2020-2021 season. Sykes, a Conway, NC native was a volunteer assistant for the past two seasons for the Battling Bishop Golf Team. Mac graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan in 1980 with a B.A. in History. He was a 4-year letter winner for the Bishops, the MVP of the golf team in 1977, 1980 Benny Goodrich Memorial Award winner, and winner of the Senior Award in 1980.

Harriet Whitehead '20 has been named the new Membership Director for the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce. Harriet is a graduate of Halifax Community College with an associate degree in Applied Science in Paralegal Studies. She graduated Spring 2020 from North Carolina Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and is currently working on her Master's in Business Administration at NC Wesleyan.

Carmera Thomas Wilhite '10 was recently honored as the Year of the Woman monthly feature by Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Organization. She is currently employed by Chesapeake Bay Foundation as the Baltimore Program Manager. A GlaxoSmithKline Scholar, Carmera graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Emily Bower '14 recently joined Thrive Internet Marketing Agency as a Social Media Strategist. Thrive Internet Marketing Agency is a full-service digital marketing agency. Emily graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Visual Arts and Journalism. While at Wesleyan she was a member of the Volleyball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Taylor-Crocker Honors Program and she also served as a senior staff writer for the school newspaper, The Decree.

R. Scott Forbes '98 has been promoted to head baseball coach at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill following the retirement of Coach Mike Fox. Forbes had been an assistant coach at UNC for 19 seasons. He graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. While at NCWC, he played baseball for Coach Fox, then followed him to UNC, where he was an assistant coach from 1999-2002. He left UNC and coached at Winthrop College from 2002-2005. In 2006 he returned to UNC as pitching coach.

A. Quinton White '68 was recently featured in J Magazine, a quarterly publication that chronicles the rebirth of Jacksonville, Florida's Downtown. Dr. White is currently professor of biology and marine science at Jacksonville University and executive director of its Marine Science Research Institute. He earned his master's degree from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D from the University of South Carolina.

Steve Felton '84 has joined the Nash Community College Foundation board for the 2020-2021 academic year. Steve studied business administration at Nash Technical College from 1981-1983, where he was a leader in Phi Beta Lambda. He continued his education at North Carolina Wesleyan College, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1984. Steve is Financial Advisor/Managing Partner with Carolina Capital Advisors, a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC.

Violet W. Ollison '19 was recently named Pamlico Community College Alumnus of the Year. Violet earned an Associate's Degree in General Education from PCC in 2007, which enabled her to advance in her career as Pamlico County Director of Senior Services. She eventually enrolled at North Carolina Wesleyan College's New Bern location and earned her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Administration in 2019. Violet is currently enrolled in the MBA program at North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Adrian M. Moore '18 recently joined North Carolina Wesleyan College as an Admissions Counselor. His territory will be the Northeastern USA, all Wake County Public Schools and 37 NC Counties. Adrian graduated from NC Wesleyan in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Administration with a concentration in Sports Administration. He was captain of the NCWC Men's Basketball team and led the team to two conference championships.

Keith E. Bass '86 has been named as the new CEO of Mattamy Homes US, effective September 28, 2020. Mattamy Homes is the largest privately owned homebuilder in North America. He was President and Managing Partner at Mill Creek Capital LLC. He is a Director with Xenia Hotels & Resorts, Rayonier Inc. and Gulfcoast Legal Services. He is a Certified General Contractor and Licensed Real Estate Broker in Florida. Keith graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

David H. Griffin, Jr., '70, age 78, of Coppell, TX and formerly of Nashville, NC passed away on March 23, 2020. He attended NC State University and later graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He worked as a chemist at Burroughs Wellcome and transitioned to working in quality control at Abbott Laboratories. His career took him to Texas in 1980. David is survived by his daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, brother and sister-in-law, sister and brother-in-law and a longtime companion.

Tammy Horton '07, age 58, of Fuquay Varina, NC died on June 4, 2020. She worked at SAS, WakeMed Security and Kane Realty Security. She loved old movies, Elton John music, Harleys, reading and spending time with friends. Tammy graduated from Louisburg College in 1995 with an Associate in Arts and from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies and Psychology. She is survived by her wife, stepfather, aunt and cousins.

David F. Waller '94, passed away due to a sudden heart attack Friday, June 19, 2020. He was an officer in the Wake County Sheriff's department for 30 years. Major Waller earned his Bachelor of Science in Justice Public Policy through the Triangle Adult Degree Program at North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1994 while he was in command of patrols for Wake County. He retired early at age 51 and began a second life at Longview Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. He is survived by his daughter and two sisters.

Brenda Rose Bandy '81, age 77, died Sunday, June 21, 2020. Brenda was a 1981 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She was a phenomenal educator for 17 years and then a mentor for new teachers after her retirement. She loved her family especially her two boys and was the proud Meme of her four grandchildren. She enjoyed vacationing at Myrtle Beach. She is survived by her sons, four grandchildren, one great-grandson, one sister and one brother.

Jacob Matthew Dore, age 24, a lifelong resident of Hampton, VA, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, July 3, 2020. Jacob was well known for his love of Jesus, being a peace keeper, his ability to see the best in everyone, a lover of animals, a genuine friend that never knew a stranger, a Gentle Giant. Jacob attended North Carolina Wesleyan College from 2015-2019 where he played football and was a member of Nu Gamma Phi. He is survived by his mother and father, grandfather, two brothers, a niece and nephew, aunt and three uncles.

Jim Kiezel Wyatt, Jr., 77, of Henderson, NC died Saturday, July 4, 2020. A retired transportation manager with Variety Wholesalers, he attended First Baptist Church of Henderson and had served in the United States Coast Guard. Jim was a charter member of the Kerr Lake Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Jim attended North Carolina Wesleyan College from 1961-1963. His wife of 54 years, Carol Elliott Brown Wyatt is a 1966 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by two sons and their wives, one sister and three grandchildren.

Edward John Kelly V '82, age 84, died July 11, 2020 in Ocala, FL, his home since 2001. He spent 21 years in the Strategic Air Command as an instructor logging over 4000 flight hours and as a training director at the Bomb Wing and Air Force Levels. Upon his retirement in 1979 as a Lt Colonel, he began work as a Program Director at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro until his retirement in 1997. He graduated from the Goldsboro Campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1982 with a degree in History and is also a graduate of Campbell University. He is survived by his wife, two sons, one daughter, 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Robert "Bob" E. Ricker '96, age 65, of Nashville, TN passed away peacefully but unexpectedly in his sleep on July 27, 2020. Bob spent most of his career in telephone including 15 years in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. In 2000 Bob and his wife fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to Nashville, TN and founding Waltzing Bear Productions on Music Row. He graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1996 earning his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Computer Science through the Triangle Adult Degree Program. He is survived by his wife Pam Ricker '99, mother, two brothers and a host of other relatives.

Kimberly L. Tyson '96 departed this life on July 28, 2020. She graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1983. She continued her education at Bennett College before graduating cum laude from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Kim taught at West Edgecombe School, D.S. Johnson Elementary School and Baskerville Elementary School. She was a member of Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she served on numerous committees. Kim is survived by her mother, two sons, four granddaughters and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family members and friends.

Bruce Allen Hayes '02, age 62, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2020. Bruce was a well-respected engineer for over 30 years. He worked in various pharmaceutical companies, including Abbott Laboratories and GSK US. He retired from GSK US. Bruce loved spending time at the beach with his family and enjoyed many hobbies which included working in the yard and bird watching. He graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and five brothers.

Mary N. Harwood '90. age 63 of Greenville, NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2020 after a brief illness. Mary was a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher and a loyal friend. She graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She retired from the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools after 28 years of service as a first-grade teacher. She was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church. She served as an Assistant Girl Scout Leader and on the Board of Directors of the State Employees Credit Union in Nashville, NC. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, brothers and their spouses.

Charles William "Billy" Smith III, age 42, passed away unexpectedly to be with his Lord and Savior on August 19, 2020. Billy obtained his Associate of Arts Degree from Craven Community College and was in the process of completing his four year degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College. He was proud of his accomplishments and looked forward to completing the process. He is survived by his mother and father, aunts and uncles, cousins, a stepsister and stepbrothers.
